Phillies option Myers to Triple-A

“I can’t say enough about Brett’s willingness to accept this assignment,” Gillick said. “He understood and is eager to get back on track again. He’s struggling right now, but he is a quality Major League pitcher who we are going to need in the second half of the season.”

Myers accepted the assignment, and because he has five-plus years in the Majors, he had the option to reject the demotion. Myers will start on Wednesday night against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees.

good plan moving him to the bullpen....jerking around a 26 year potential ace never has repercussions, right?

I can't see how pitching in the minors is going to get the fastball back above 90 MPH. I think we're looking at a $8.5M set-up man. The curve is still very sharp, but he just throws a very hittable fastball. Get him in the pen, get the MPH up to 93 and he can be effective again.

I haven't seen the guy pitch this year, but allowing 24 HRs in a half season (with more than half of those away from CBP) doesn't portend well.

He had to clear (revocable) waivers, too. But with an ERA nearing 6 and a year and a half and $16+M remaining and enough personal baggage to fill an SUV or three, I guess that really wasn't much of an issue.

My thoughts exactly. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy....

I'd be right there on the karma train with the rest of you, but I can't imagine that seeing his major league career go up in smoke willmaks Myers less stupid and violent toward his wife.

Especially since he could be home a lot more often now.

How the hell did Pat Gillick escape this one unharmed?

Well, Gillick probably would've hit back.

His velocity was a problem early, but he's been touching 92-3 with regularity since then. It's a little down, but there's no reason he should be among the worst SPs in the NL with that.

Is it possible that he's just a total and complete head case? The quotes I read from him early in the season suggested that he just totally lost his confidence period.

I think that question has been answered for a while now.

I've long advocated Myers die in a fire, but this is a step in the right direction.

Right, but being a head case doesn't translate to teams just mashing off of you, it turns into Perez or Zambrano-like meltdowns. Myers just gets rocked for the most part game in and game out. His fastball is the most hittable on the team. There may have been cases early on where he was throwing stupid pitches because he was angry, but for the most part, he is more like Zito in that he just doesn't have the stuff.

He looks like he is unhappy out there after the first hit, but that's because he should be unhappy: his fastball stinks.

Kim Myers looks like Darryl Hannah in that photo.

They're both blonde, I guess.

I think she looks more like Jenny Finch. Not that Jenny Finch isn't actually better-looking.

The worst thing about that article is that Brett Myers named his son Kolt. I guess he's just a huge Roger Clemens fan.
