Boots Randolph’s made for Walkin’
The Phillies, who are openly searching for a lefthanded reliever, have acquired Stephen Randolph from the Houston Astros for a player to be named later.
There are reasons to believe that Randolph, 34, could soon join J.C. Romero as the second lefty in the bullpen. He has a 1.23 earned run average for Triple A Round Rock this season and had allowed just 8 hits while striking out 21 in 14 2/3 innings.
There are also reasons to believe he might not be the answer. He has command issues, as evidenced by 11 walks.

I know they want to Fabio Castro to start, but he's got to be a massively better option out of the pen than Randolph, even if Randolph's free. At least Castro owns LHB.
i am relieveed that he got traded so they won't be tempted to bring him up again. maybe the phils pitching coach can do something with him. the dbax couldn't and neither could the stros
Dubee: Brett, you need to long toss.
Myers: No.
Dubee: Okay, then.
Myers just gave up 6 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings against the D-Backs today bringing his ERA up to 5.69 and his WHIP to 1.47 and the HR he gave up to Chris Young broke his tie with Roy Oswalt for most total HR allowed -- he's given up 12.
I think it's realistic. If Howard can put up a second half that more accurately reflects his 2006-07 seasons, I believe he can net the Phillies a package at least 75% of what the Mets got for Santana (maybe two good prospects and maybe a slightly above-average regular player).
However, I'd prefer to have another GM in before any major trades are made, as Pat Gillick is leaving after this season. Ruben Amaro, Jr. is his likely successor but Brian Cashman is someone I'd much, much rather see in there, since it's almost a given he's going to leave the Yankees after this season. Amaro and another candidate, Mike Arbuckle, are a couple of corporate yes-men who don't value statistical analysis as much as a modern general manager needs to.
Soccer has been the sport of the future going on 40 years now.
