Phils acquire LH reliever

Boots Randolph’s made for Walkin’

The Phillies, who are openly searching for a lefthanded reliever, have acquired Stephen Randolph from the Houston Astros for a player to be named later.
There are reasons to believe that Randolph, 34, could soon join J.C. Romero as the second lefty in the bullpen. He has a 1.23 earned run average for Triple A Round Rock this season and had allowed just 8 hits while striking out 21 in 14 2/3 innings.

There are also reasons to believe he might not be the answer. He has command issues, as evidenced by 11 walks.

Ed Wade can still make pointless relief pitcher deals for the Phillies while working for the Astros?

I know they want to Fabio Castro to start, but he's got to be a massively better option out of the pen than Randolph, even if Randolph's free. At least Castro owns LHB.

It doesn't look too promising but these are the kind of deals that have worked out for Gillick. I don't remember this guy at all.

Bill, pretty funny line there about Ed Wade.

stephen randolph is a guy who is a fantastic AAA pitcher because he gets LOTS of Ks because AAA hitters will swing at stuff out of the strike zone. but he absolutely SUCKS at the ML level because guys won't swing at the stuff that AAA guys will, then he either walks a lot of guys or throws stuff over the plate which doesn't move much and he gets creamed.

i am relieveed that he got traded so they won't be tempted to bring him up again. maybe the phils pitching coach can do something with him. the dbax couldn't and neither could the stros

Sorry baseball chick, the Phillies' pitching coach won't be able to do much. This is a (paraphrased) conversation between the pitching coach (Rich Dubee) and Brett Myers relating to his struggles.

Dubee: Brett, you need to long toss.
Myers: No.
Dubee: Okay, then.

Myers just gave up 6 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings against the D-Backs today bringing his ERA up to 5.69 and his WHIP to 1.47 and the HR he gave up to Chris Young broke his tie with Roy Oswalt for most total HR allowed -- he's given up 12.

The drive-time guy on 950 was talking about trading Howard today. He proposed Hughes, Melky, prospect for Howard as a reasonable deal. Am I crazy, do I overvalue prospects, or is this completely unrealistic? Howard is under team control for the next couple of years, but he's going to pull down upwards of $30m nonetheless. Between Hughes and Melky, you fill two positions that are tougher to fill than 1B (or LF if this means Burrell to 1B) under reasonable salaries for at least 2 years in each case, plus less costly arb years for a couple after that.

If my last name was reliever I would name my kid LH. Leonard Henry?

I think it's realistic. If Howard can put up a second half that more accurately reflects his 2006-07 seasons, I believe he can net the Phillies a package at least 75% of what the Mets got for Santana (maybe two good prospects and maybe a slightly above-average regular player).

However, I'd prefer to have another GM in before any major trades are made, as Pat Gillick is leaving after this season. Ruben Amaro, Jr. is his likely successor but Brian Cashman is someone I'd much, much rather see in there, since it's almost a given he's going to leave the Yankees after this season. Amaro and another candidate, Mike Arbuckle, are a couple of corporate yes-men who don't value statistical analysis as much as a modern general manager needs to.
