Piniella doesn’t want Cubs watching video of bad at-bats

“Mr. Danville has been singing the praises of his new motor car to all who will listen,”

“We’ve talked about closing down the video (room),” Piniella said. “But what happens invariably is the pitching coach will go down there from time to time, and so will the hitting coach.

“But if we have to, we’ll close it down for the players, at least during the game. Visualization is a great tool. But at the same time, boy, visualize good things. Don’t keep putting bad pictures in your mind.”

Piniella said that to his players during his closed-door meeting Sunday in San Diego, though he conceded videotapes are a good tool.

“(Bench coach) Alan Trammell and I were talking about ‘How did we ever play baseball?’ ” Piniella said. “We must’ve played in the Dark Ages, without looking at videos or anything. If I’m going to look at a video as a player, I want to see myself doing well so I can visualize a positive thought, a positive vision.

“If I see myself rolling over or swinging at a bad pitch, popping up a ball right down the middle, then that’s what I’ve got in my mind.”

Piniella said he prefers his players “visualize” the old-fashioned way-by sitting on the bench and watching the opposing pitcher.

“See how he’s pitching you, and it gives me an idea of how he’s going to pitch me,” he said. “See what he’s getting over (the plate). See what he’s getting people out with.

“If you’re watching tape of yourself pop up or ground out, you miss a lot of things that can help you.”

This means the Cubs haven't watched any footage in over a week.

Or, you know, you can see what you did wrong in that last at-bat, and fix it. Rather than trying to figure out what went wrong, "correcting" something that didn't need to be corrected, and making things worse.

Can their relievers watch video of their crappy pitches?

If I have to watch it, they should have to too.

Maybe Lou just discovered The Secret.

Lou has been teaching hitting for longer than many of the posters here have been alive. Been pretty good at.

And by the look of things last night it worked.

Just that somebody forgot to explain how to get Sanchez out.
   8. CFiJ Posted: May 26, 2009 at 10:07 AM (#3193431)
So, me and Harveys are the only ones with no problem with what Lou's saying here? Because it seems pretty sound from a psychological point of view.
   9. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken (Dewey is a slacker) Posted: May 26, 2009 at 10:18 AM (#3193433)
Yes, but he's dismissing any positive value from watching video out of hand.

Larry:

As CiFiJ and I recognize, Lou is working some angle with his team. Video has been around forever. Lou has been around even longer than forever. He knows video has its place.

Right now Lou thinks his team would be better off going a different route.

Well, I can agree with Lou on that. Nothing is working offensively, and while I knew Rameriz's absence would hurt, it's pathetic that that loss would turn this offense into such a vortex of suck. It's been 10 years -- aside from the occasional Dusty days of starting Bynum in LF while Neifi also starting -- since I've seen the Cubs offense scuffle this badly.

It's almost June. Enough is enough.

zonk:

Last year the Cubs had only two spots in the order at the end of the season below average in production, shortstop and right field. This year has been very different as only two current regulars are ABOVE average in production.

Soto has been bad.

Derek Lee has not hit since last April.

Second base, well let's not go there or Southside will spontaneously combust.

Theriot is Theriot.

Third base is a gaping void.

Milton is feuding with umpires, always a good tactic.

The team has a few issues.
   13. zonk Posted: May 26, 2009 at 11:46 AM (#3193474)
Soto has picked it up in May (.270/.347/.365 -- not earth shattering, but not his April, Mendoza territory), though he's been as worthless as the rest of the offense for the last week or so.

I think Lee is pretty much cooked - at least that contract only has about 18 months left.

Current and persistent injury issues aside, Aramis is really the only bat the Cubs have signed long term that I feel good about (and he's got an opt-out clause).

I read a rumor over the weekend that the Cubs were looking at the Pad's Kouzmanoff (I assume he would fill in at 3b and the Cubs feel he could slide to 2b?) - which I suppose wouldn't be a bad acquisition (especially if he's a toss-in with Peavy!) - but there's only so much that can be done to fix this team. There are a lot of immobile contracts and precious few positions that the Cubs can really afford to upgrade.

If you'd have told me in February that Fukudome would be playing full-time and getting on base at a .420+ clip, I'd have thought the offense would be swimming in runs.

Pad's Kouzmanoff (I assume he would fill in at 3b and the Cubs feel he could slide to 2b?)
if there was anyway that Kouz could play 2B, he would be there right now. The friars have had gaping holes at the position for a few seasons now.

Kouz cannot play 2B.

I don't get that Pinella is saying no video. He's saying no going to the clubhouse during the game and watching video. I agree with this, whether it's to see good or bad. Play the game. Fix stuff after the game. We like to chant sample size a lot around here. Well, it's a slam-dunk that every player will have lots of bad PAs over the course of the year. It makes no sense to go "study" video after everyone of them. It isn't a "problem" that every now and then you don't keep your hands back (for example). It becomes a problem if you're doing it consistently.
   16. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: May 26, 2009 at 12:13 PM (#3193502)
I think one of the problems is that players THEMSELVES find the game taxing even though THEIR approachs contribute to the in-game dead time.

So they go up the tunnel to find something that grabs their attention.

Lee has an OPS north of 1000 in May.

Lou seems to be referring to watching video of yourself hitting. I'm on the fence as to whether they should be doing that, but I have no idea whether it helps or hurts psychologically. I suspect it's different for each hitter.

But can the players watch videos of the opposing pitcher? I would think that would be extremely useful mid-game. If you struck out on a slider, maybe you can pick up something on the video to tip you off.
   19. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: May 26, 2009 at 02:54 PM (#3193775)
Derek had a 7 game hot streak going 12-27 which raised his BA by forty odd points. He did finally hit his first road homer of the year in SD.

I like Lee, and he is an easy guy to root for. But his bat really does look like it's regressed slider speed. Toss in the DP potential and he's not an appealing option.
   20. CFiJ Posted: May 26, 2009 at 02:55 PM (#3193776)
Yes, but he's dismissing any positive value from watching video out of hand.
I don't see where you could possibly get that. He's specifically talking about viewing video of bad at-bats during the game. He "conceded that video tape is a good tool" and is quoted as saying, "If I’m going to look at a video as a player, I want to see myself doing well so I can visualize a positive thought, a positive vision." He's suggesting that rather watching video to pick up bad mechanics during a game after a bad at-bat, that they should focus on video of good at-bats to get a good visualization of what to do, and during the game to focus on the pitcher. Focusing on bad mechanics during the game will only get the players in the wrong head space.

Will Farney be allowed to look at video during the game?
   22. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: May 26, 2009 at 03:56 PM (#3193891)
I think Lou has a point. Adjusting on the fly can be very hard, and trying to adjust by reviewing each and every bad at-bat could cause more problems then it solves.

To me, it's like trying to fix your swing in the middle of a golf round. You slice 2 or 3, so you make some kind of adjustment, but now you're hooking,...

Probably better off going with your game plan, and adjusting after the game.
   23. kthejoker Posted: May 27, 2009 at 03:16 PM (#3195496)
I dunno, didn't Ted Williams quiz his leadoff hitters relentlessly about this pitch and that pitch? He would've probably liked some in-game video.

Different strokes ...
