PIT Post-Gazette: Pirates, Tigers discuss Wilson

According to two team sources, the Pirates are discussing a deal with the Detroit Tigers that would send [Jack Wilson to Detroit].

Detroit manager Jim Leyland covets a sound defensive shortstop to give him options other than Carlos Guillen… The Tigers’ thinking, apparently, is that Wilson could be a reserve down the stretch, then the regular shortstop in 2008 while Guillen, who will turn 33 this fall, moves to first base or designated hitter.
...
Even if Wilson stays put, one or more of the three relievers probably will be traded. There is no shortage of teams seeking that commodity, and Chacon, Torres and Marte are three of the top five relievers known to be available.

Chief among the potential suitors, as of late last night, were the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox.
...
“We’re certainly very active in talks,” Littlefield said. “If there’s something out there that fits for us and it’s an upgrade for us, we’re certainly going to try to make that happen.”

I'm putting the odds at 1:2 that Neifi Perez will be the other end of this deal.

Chacon's in the bullpen now?

Remeber the outrage last year when the Yankees "stole", Cacon from the Rockies and then used him to steal Craig Wilson?

Here's how that "discussion" should have gone.

Tigers: "That Jack Wilson guy sucks."
Pirates: "Yep."
Tigers: "Enough about him, back to Torres and Marte..."

Huh? Maybe Marte, but Torres and Chacon?

I'm guessing they want Carlos GUillen straight up and you can call it a deal.

The Tigers would need to add something besides a caddy for Cesar Izturis.

It's because they want to move Guillen to 1B. In order to do that, it's important to go ahead and pay a 400% premium to bring in the same player as Omar Infante already is.

Chacon has been really good out of the pen this year... a silly attempt to turn him back into a starter hides his pretty good record as a reliever. 55 IP with 46 K vs. 26 BB and a 3.07 ERA. 6 HR in 55 IP is pretty good as well... he has been destroying RHB's this year and getting destroyed by LHB's, which would make him a great addition for a team with one or two other good relievers.

Torres is a great relief option if you believe in his previous 3.5 seasons of work where he was basically the same really good reliever for about 300 innings rather than his somewhat goofy (and partly injured) 35 IP from this year.

Yeah, if you hold him up side-by-side with Dan Wheeler, his '04-'06 record is basically just as strong, maybe a little stronger if you really like the 20 extra innings a year.

Well, the Craig Wilson thing didn't work out, but the Yankees did Chacon from the Rockies for...(goes to check)...Ramon Ramirez (sporting a 10.29 ERA this year) and Eduardo Sierra (Major League games: Zero) and don't win the AL East in 2004 without him (7-3, 2.85 plus a solid playoff start). I think that one was pretty clearly a steal.

According to the Denver Post, the Tigers are also talking to the Rockies about Clint Barmes.

I was very critical of the Chacon deal, but Ramirez is not that bad. He was quite good last year (139 ERA+), then opened this season with seven straight scoreless appearances before he got hurt. Since coming off the DL in mid-May his ERA is 16.62. If he ever gets healthy, he should be all right.

Vlad gets Torres right.

As for Chacon...he's a good long reliever and 5th/6th starter. Since that becomes unnecessary in the playoffs I don't know why a team would add him at the deadline.
