PIT Post-Gazette: Torres files grievance, asks for trade

Reliever Salomon Torres, angry with the Pirates about what he feels was a broken promise in negotiating his most recent contract, has filed a grievance against the team and asked general manager Dave Littlefield to trade him.

“I’ve given everything I have to the team, to the city of Pittsburgh, and I would like nothing more than to be part of a championship there,” Torres said by phone from Bradenton, Fla., where he is rehabilitating his right elbow. “But I’ve had enough. They tricked me into signing that contract...”
...
Torres, who did not have an agent in those [2006] talks, contends that he agreed to less money than market value because Littlefield had strongly suggested—though not in writing—that the team would consider renting one of the two baseball academies Torres built in his native Dominican Republic.

“I liked the idea,” Torres said. “I was thinking of it like deferred money, something I could have for later in life. They kept me interested enough. They made me believe. Dave told me he’d think about it, but that I’d have to sign at a hometown discount. I did that.”

After signing that contract, then waiting for the Pirates for a few months, then having one last futile talk with Littlefield in November, Torres gave up and rented his second facility to the Texas Rangers late last year.

Two things - this is pretty shrewed, if true, of Torres... and, does anyone see the conflict in a current player leasing an academy to a team he doesn't play for?

A) It's a smart business deal on Torres' part IF he'd gotten it in writing, like back in the day when the team would buy you a car wash or something. I suspect it was more a "we'll see" that he took too much to heart.

B) Seems like a conflict to me. I work for a media organization. If I, on the side, started a consulting business that served a competitor, I'd think my employer would have every right to be displeased.

Bottom line: get it in writing. I can't believe how many times I've seen a relationship go south because terms of an agreement were not reduced to writing. Sheesh!

I don't understand. According to Torres, Littlefield said that he would think about it. Apparently he did, and decided not to (rent the facility). Where is the trickery? Did Torres say that Littlefield made a promise and then reneged? If he did, then he could certainly sue him for breach of contract. If not, then where is the problem other than the fact that Torres does not like the decision that Littlefield made?

If someone makes a promise to you as part of an agreement, get it in writing. That is one thing that agents are for. If you don't, it is your fault. If someone says that they might do something or even that they probably will (but not for sure) and they don't, you might be disappointed, but you have no legal or ethical right to cry foul.

I would be wary of drawing too strong a conclusion from a newspaper article. Torres may have told the reporter that he'd been made a promise that the Pirates would do more than just consider his facility. But then the rewrite people and the lawyers go to work and soften the reporting of his remarks because, of course, you don't want to contradict the club too strongly since you have to live with them, while Mr Torres goes off to Texas or somewhere.

Littlefield pretended to be interesting in renting. Torres pretended to be a good pitcher.

Negotiations are like that.

Torres has been a good pitcher until this season.

Next time he goes for a contract Scott Boras will be his agent.

While it would have made a lot of sense for Sal to have brought an agent to his contract negotiations, I'd say that, as a close follower of the Pirates, Torres likely has good reason to be upset with his GM. Littlefield has pulled F*** Y** stunts like this one in other cases. Generally speaking, management-player relations in Pittsburgh are bad. Management nearly always takes an us vs. them attitude to its players.

That said, I doubt Littlefield is blackballing Torres. The Pirate bullpen sucks and needs Torres if he's healthy. Besides, the Pirate FO and owners would rather rub broken glass over their faces than unnecessarily pay a player to sit.
