Pitcher Analysis: Craig Hansen

Craig Hansen has so far struggled to put up good numbers in the major leagues, despite only allowing 2 home runs in the minors. A brief statistical analysis of Hansen shows that he was never ready for the majors, and a mechanical breakdown of his delivery raises serious questions about the long-term health of his shoulder/elbow.

Just reading the intro saddens me but doesn't surprise me - sigh

I watched Hansen pitch at Camden Yards the other day, and I winced. I don't remember thinking his mechanics were this ugly when I first saw him in 2005, though. Has he tinkered with anything since then? He appears to be "popping up" on his landing leg as he gets to release, which is all kinds of bad: for stuff, for command, for health.

Not much to like here, other than that his results can be construed as pretty good given how poor his mechanics are. If he overhauled his delivery, I wonder if he could harness his stuff more consistently. Unfortunately, I think it may take an injury to compel him to do that.

I think the shorthand for Hansen's mechanical adjustments are (more or less) as follows:

1. Hansen is drafted with what looks like a pretty ugly arm action and great stuff.
2. Hansen changes his mechanics, probably at the direction of coaches employed by Scott Boras, and has very poor results off of diminished stuff (Sox coaches probably were also tinkering, to be fair).
3. Hansen goes back to his old mechanics and "rediscovers" his stuff.

Of course he's still not getting the best results, but his slider is back to being a sick pitch and his fastball has more velocity. Of course, as the article states, control is still an (or the) issue.

I missed this when it first went around. Hansen's delivery seemed kind of "shouldery" to me, but it's sad he hasn't been able to harness his stuff and it appears he may never be able to do so very well.
