"Anybody picking the White Sox to make it past the first round is either blinded by homerism or delirious with one-game playoff-itis."

Buerhle, Floyd, and Danks are pretty good. Certainly good enough to win their start. If Quentin was healthy, the Sox would have a much better shot at putting up the 3-5 runs that will be needed in each game, but stranger things have happened.

stranger things have happened.

The 2006 Cardinals won the World Series despite being easily the worst team to make the postseason. I'm not going to predict that the Sox are going to do anything in the playoffs, but there's no such thing as a major-league playoff team who has no chance.

OK, here's what I've done.

1. I've calculated the probability of each pick being correct (victorious team, not number of games) given the results to date, and a big honkin' assumption of equal win probability for each team in any given unplayed game. So, before yesterday's games each LDS pick had a 50% chance of being correct. After the Phillies won, the probabilities look something like this:

25.00% PHI win in 3
25.00% PHI win in 4
18.75% PHI win in 5
18.75% MIL win in 5
12.50% MIL win in 4
00.00% MIL win in 3
---------------------
68.75% PHI wins the series

2. I did the same for following rounds, still assuming 50% probability of winning any unplayed game. Whereas prior to yesterday the Phillies had 25% probability of winning the NLCS (50% chance of winning given they make it, times 50% probability that they make it), today it's a 34.375% probability because there's now a greater probability that they make it.

3. I used this to generate a score:

score = 2 + (sum of LDS probabilities) + 4x(sum of LCS probabilities) + 16x(WS probability)

Those weights of 4 and 16 were intended to give each round equal weight at the start. (There are fewer games, plus lower probabilities, in later rounds). Before the games started yesterday, everyone who submitted a guess had a score of 8. The best anyone can do in the end is a score of 30. Why the constant of 2 added? Well, it makes the final number a nice, round number. That, and even someone who got them all wrong will end up 2 points higher than anyone who didn't make a prediction.

I'll be updating this thread every now and then through the playoffs with the scores so far.

There are 87 predictions, 28 of which are doing better than what you'd get had you picked based on 2008 head-to-head record. The folks in first place are there because their picks in each round include some combo of Boston, Philly, and the Dodgers, all of whom won yesterday.

* PHI and TBR didn't play each other this year; for the WS I defaulted back to overall regular season record.

04.625 Devin McCullen, Weeks T. Olive
04.250 Cabbage, Cuddyer Mak'er**

Again, first place has every picked team in every round leading their respective series, but also their WS picks have commanding 2-0 leads. Others near the top have every picked team in every round leading their series, but their WS pick (either Boston or Tampa) has only a 1-0 lead to date.

The folks in last place... each of the teams they've picked have yet to win a single game.

As of now, only 19 picks are doing better than just simply picking based on 2008 head-to-head record. Twenty-four picks are doing worse than just simply picking based on 2008 overall regular season record.

Lastly, for each score I've listed everyone in order based on the time of their prediction. For example, among those with a score of 8.75, SoSH U had the earliest post in this thread.

** Cuddyer Mak'er picked "armaggeddon" for the WS, which I've interpreted as being a pick for the Cubs.

Just for fun I calculated maximum and mimimum possible scores, given the current state.

Nineteen people could still get perfect scores (30). The lowest-ranked folks who could still get a perfect score are Harris and 3Com Park. They both have the White Sox and Angels prevailing in the ALDS, with the latter winning the WS. Their current score is 8.

Twenty-two could still get a score of 2. The highest-ranked folks who could end there are... well, all the others with a score of 8 currently. Each has Boston and Tampa Bay advancing, with the former winning the WS.

People with scores of 12-14 could get each of the remaining three rounds correct (NLCS, ALCS, WS). Those with scores of 9-11 could still be correct on the WS and only one of the LCS. Scores in the 5-7 range can only get one of the LCS.

Scores of 2-4 are done. Either they incorrectly predicted all four LDS, or they were correct on some but are guaranteed to be wrong in the LCS and WS. As such their scores won't change. I intend to drop them from the mid-series summaries, but have bolded them here for easier reference. (Note that while their scores won't change, their ranking could improve. It is possible for those with higher scores to end up with lower scores. Well, not lower than 2, but still...)

Only six people (those with a score of 14) can still get a perfect score. Other random notes:

- Of the six people with scores of 14, five picked the Dodgers to beat the Phillies.

- Of the 17 people who still have a shot at getting the next three series correct, the ALCS predictions are 9-8 in favor of the Rays; the NLCS, 9-8 in favor of the Phillies.

- Had you picked solely based on regular-season overall record, you would already be done; neither the Angels nor the Cubs have made it to the LCS.

- I am both the highest-ranked to have picked the Cubs in the first round, and the highest-ranked to have picked the Phillies to win the WS.

- And Mike Crudale.

Cubs - 22
Angels - 14
Rays - 13
Red Sox - 10
Phillies - 5
Dodgers - 4
White Sox - 4
Brewers - 2
Wow. Just goes to show how this game can make even a site full of educated fans look foolish. Sure, the bottom two pick were both eliminated (W. Sox and Brewers)...but so were the top two, and the one which got the most picks (almost twice as many as any other team!) was the only one swept away in three games.

Cue the b*tching about short series and how awful they are.

Cue the b*tching about short series and how awful they are.
Had they tacked on 2 extra games to each series you'd have three teams trying to battle back from a 3-1 deficit, and one team down 3-0. All other things being equal each series likely would've ended in a similar fashion to how they ended in a short series.

Of course, not everything is equal. Teams might have employed different strategies, pitching rotations, etc., had they been in a 7-game series; the schedule for days off likely would've been different as well. So it's not crystal clear that these series would've ended the same way. But I think most of the actual winners still would have won in that hypothetical case.

shoewizard, pocket8pin, and tyler each picked a BOS/LAD Series. (Hey, at least their two WS picks are still alive...)

It's a little disappointing to see a simple strategy like picking the teams that had a better head-to-head record perform better than almost everyone. That strategy went 2-for-4 in the first round, which isn't impressive; but the two that were correct were the two picked to advance to the World Series - and they are on track to do so. Luck? I don't know. Believe what you want.

EDIT: The line at 6.50 strikes me as mildly amusing every time I see it laid out that way. It's like someone is introducing Tom to an audience: (drumroll) And now, the most interesting man in the world, Toooom Nawwwwrocki!

Through Game 4 of both LDS:

19.0 fra paolo, Guapo, Guts
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18.0 ### 2008 Head-to-Head records (LAA, TBR, CHC, PHI / TBR, PHI / TBR* ) ###
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17.0 philistine
16.0 villageidiom, sj, Juan V.
15.5 SoSH U, kj, bibigon, Son of Snigglet, Moscow In The Bleachers
14.5 Eddieot, Esoteric, Loren F., AJM, Jim Wisinski, Vaux, strong silence,
14.5. sotapop, SaveUsBullpenJesus
13.5 Randy Jones, Matt, TomH
11.0 jmurph, Theo Epstein Apologists, Cris E
10.0 Cooperstown Schtick, Ivan Grushenko

05.5. arkitekton
04.5 Bob "Jugement" Dernier, NJ in DC, Lassus

It's still theoretically possible for someone to get a perfect score. But we'd need to see one of the following outcomes in the World Series:

TBR over LAD
LAD over TBR
BOS over LAD
BOS over PHI

Each one relies on a team that is down 3-1 currently.

It is also theoretically possible for someone in the above list to end with a score of 3, lower than some of the people I'd bolded upthread whose scores are frozen; but that would require either Philly or Tampa to be eliminated.

Yeah, you look worse because I dropped from the list 22 predictions that you can't underperform. You're in the top 75%.

Some of y'all are done: you picked neither Tampa nor Boston to win the ALCS, and didn't pick the Phillies to win the WS. I'll root out all the dead weight after the ALCS... although some might argue that's what Tampa Bay is trying to do tonight.

I managed to go 3/3 in the NL playoffs and 0/3 in the AL playoffs (with an AL WS team).
Guess I should watch some AL games once in a while.

Bold means done. You're locked in at those scores; you predicted neither the Phillies nor the Rays to win the WS.

To take some of the suspense away... For those left alive, the possibilities are:

Rays win
29 fra paolo, Guts
28 ### 2008 Head-to-Head records (LAA, TBR, CHC, PHI / TBR, PHI / TBR* ) ###
26 philistine
25 SoSH U, sj, kj, bibigon, Son of Snigglet, Moscow In The Bleachers
24 Esoteric, Loren F., AJM, Jim Wisinski, sotapop, SaveUsBullpenJesus
23 Randy Jones, Matt, TomH
13 Guapo
09 villageidiom, Juan V.
08 Eddieot, Vaux, strong silence

Phillies win
29 Guapo
25 villageidiom, Juan V.
24 Eddieot, Vaux, strong silence
13 fra paolo, Guts
12 ### 2008 Head-to-Head records (LAA, TBR, CHC, PHI / TBR, PHI / TBR* ) ###
10 philistine
09 SoSH U, sj, kj, bibigon, Son of Snigglet, Moscow In The Bleachers
08 Esoteric, Loren F., AJM, Jim Wisinski, sotapop, SaveUsBullpenJesus
07 Randy Jones, Matt, TomH

To date, the only incorrect pick for fra paolo and Guapo was LAA/BOS; for Guts, the only incorrect pick was CHC/LAD.

I'm curious how 2008 head to head records can move at all (between 12 and 28 pts) considering that the Phillies and Rays didn't play each other in 2008.

And you can't be counting the world series, because then it would be correct, regardless.

See the footnote in #124. Obviously it's not a footnote any more, but it answers the question.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

In order for me to properly celebrate my victory, I would appreciate it if all the members of the community could visualize me:

(1) screaming loudly

(2) grabbing my crotch

(3) pointing at them.

Simultaneously, of course. Thank you again.

Allow me to toot my own horn as the only entry with Phils in 5. I couldn't be happier.

I would congratulate you, but I'm currently screaming, grabbing my crotch, and pointing at you.

Woohoo dead last!

You're wrong even with that prediction. In post 135 I started dropping people whose predictions had reached the dead-end stage. Cuddyer Mak'er is the official last-place entrant, having made zero correct predictions AND of those with zero correct was the latest set of predictions submitted AND predicted the world would end before the WS would be decided. There were like a dozen worse predictions than yours.

Yours were bad, I'll give you that.

Congrats to Guapo (and to the handsome runner-up).
