Press Telegram: Keisser: Face it: Red Sox are better team

Everyone wants to put the Los Angeles Angels on the couch and call in Dr. Phil.

The media is staring at the local baseball nine out of the corner of its eye looking for that “ah-ha” moment when they can say without equivocation that the Angels are psyched out by the Boston Red Sox.

The fans beseech their team to tell them why they always enter the postseason with momentum and confidence, take one look at the big bad Sox and fall like the British at Concord.

The answer isn’t psychological. It’s physical.

The Red Sox are simply better. The Angels peck, the Red Sox hammer.

The Angels are resolute and resourceful, the Red Sox are unconscious.

In the far reaches of neurobabbleland this is known as Rogelio Moret Maladaptivity.

I thought that this was a very winable series for the Angels, and a lot of this comes down to health. But now, I am not so sure. Describing the Red Sox as a team that "hammers" was more apt when Manny was in the lineup, Ortiz did not have a wrist problem, and there were no injury concerns for Lowell. Regardless, the Sox are crushing the ball (.481 team SLG), and that is without any contribution from Pedroia and only a minimal contribution from Youk. If they can keep this up, Beckett's injury won't carry the gravitas that filled the Boston airwaves before the playoffs began.

Well, Beckett's no sure thing to dominate Game 3, so there's a shot for the Angels to creep back into it.

The difficulty that the Angels have -- and I said this before the series started -- is that they're just not that good. Their lineup runs three hitters deep max, and their pitching in front of the bullpen is not markedly better than the Sox'. They've brought a knife to a gun fight.

Howie Kendrick was pressing really badly last night for one.
And that kind of loss is pretty heartbreaking.
Vladi looked like he was ready to cry after the Sox's ninth inning rally,
I'm not sure if he'll be able to shake it off by Sunday.

At some point the umber of consecutive losses clearly has nothing to do with one team having more talent.

This coward waits to publish this story now. No balls.
