Also, a big BTF Happy Birthday to Laurie Reis. That has to be one of the most girly names in baseball history.

Trivia time:

In baseball history, there have been 22 different times a manager has lasted at least a dozen seasons with a team. On four occasions, he ended that stretch with a losing record. Can you name any of those four managerial stints of 12+ seasons with a sub-.500 winning percentage?
   3. Uncle Willy Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:19 AM (#3012981)
Without looking it up, Connie Mack would have to be one. I'll have to give the others some thought.
   4. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:24 AM (#3012983)
Tom Kelly, Jim Leyland, Gene Mauch?
   5. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:33 AM (#3012992)
Connie Mack is one.

Tom Kelly is another.

Jim Leyland only lasted 11 years in Pittsburgh. Gene Mauch never lasted longer than 9 years in any stint.

Halfway there.

I guessed Clark Griffith but was way wrong; he was never 12 years with the same club either, and actually had a pretty good record.
   7. Le Comble du Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:38 AM (#3012999)
Leafing through B-Ref, one thing I have learned is that stints of 12 consecutive years with the same team are awfully rare, good bad or indifferent.

Bucky Harris had three stints with the Senators that added up to 18 seasons at a .485 clip, but that probably doesn't qualify him as an answer to the question, I'm guessing.

I also found another answer, but since I looked it up I will shut up about it :)
   8. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:39 AM (#3013001)
Naw, Bucky doesn't qualify.
   9. Le Comble du Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:40 AM (#3013002)
Bruce Bochy. I did guess that one fairly. :)
   10. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:42 AM (#3013003)
Yes, Bruce Bochy is the third.

And then there was one.
   11. DK near DC Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:43 AM (#3013005)
Earl Weaver?
   12. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:46 AM (#3013009)
Cute. No. Not Weaver.
   13. Tom Nawrocki Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:48 AM (#3013011)
Jimmy Dykes managed some bad teams for long stretches of time, but I don't know that he last 12 years with any of them.
   14. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:52 AM (#3013017)
DING! DING! DING! DING!

Jimmy Dykes lasted a little over 12 years with the Whtie Sox. He is the only man to last that long without ever winning a pennant.

Tom Kelly had the lowest winning percentage of anyone in a 12+ year stretch with one team, .478 in 15 years in Minnesota.

Anyone want to try guessing the other 18 times a manager lasted at least 12 consecutive seasons with a team? Earl Weaver's been mentioned, leaving 17 more.

Get some easy ones out of the way:

Bobby Cox
Joe Torre
Walter Alston
Tommy Lasorda
   16. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:03 PM (#3013032)
Yup to them. That's 9 out of 22.

The 9 mentioned: Dykes, Bochy, Mack, Kelly, Weaver, Cox, Torre, Alston, and Lasorda.
   17. SoSH U at work Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:06 PM (#3013036)
Two more McObvious ones.

McGraw
   18. HOPE: Madison Obamagarner (Flynn) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:08 PM (#3013043)
Stengel with the Yankees - 49-60.
   19. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:13 PM (#3013046)
That's three more. That's 12 down - over halfway there.

The 12mentioned: Alston, Bochy, Cox, Dykes, Kelly, Lasorda, Mack, Torre, Weaver.
   20. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:15 PM (#3013049)
Sparky Anderson
Miller Huggins
Wilbert Robinson
Red Schoendheist
Bill Terry
Dusty Baker?
   21. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:18 PM (#3013051)
Bill Terry only lasted 10 years (well, actually 9 3/4, but I count it as 10). Baker also falls short.

You got the other four -- and I thought Schoendienst might be the last one guessed.

16 mentioned so far: Alston, Anderson, Bochy, Cox, Dykes, Huggins, Kelly, Lasorda, Mack, McCarthy, McGraw, Robinson, Schoendienst, Stengel, Torre, Weaver.
   22. ess eff Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:20 PM (#3013053)
La Russa is at 13 years and counting with the Cardinals.
   23. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:22 PM (#3013054)
LaRussa makes 17.

Mentioned so far: Alston, Anderson, Bochy, Cox, Dykes, Huggins, Kelly, LaRussa, Lasorda, Mack, McCarthy, McGraw, Robinson, Schoendienst, Stengel, Torre, Weaver.

Just 5 more to go.
   24. Santanaland Diaries Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:28 PM (#3013057)
Joe Cronin.
   25. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:28 PM (#3013058)
Joe Cronin
   26. ess eff Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:29 PM (#3013060)
Does Anson count?
   27. SoSH U at work Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:33 PM (#3013063)
Frank Selee
   28. Le Comble du Bob Dernier Cri Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:35 PM (#3013066)
Fred Clarke, certainly.

Edit: And Hughie Jennings.
   29. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:35 PM (#3013068)
Cronin, Anson, and Selee all count and are on.

You're only missing two more.

20 mentioned so far: Alston, Anderson, Anson, Bochy, Cox, Cronin, Dykes, Huggins, Kelly, LaRussa, Lasorda, Mack, McCarthy, McGraw, Robinson, Schoendienst, Selee, Stengel, Torre, Weaver.
   30. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:37 PM (#3013069)
Fred Clarke is #21.

Only one to go!

21 mentioned so far: Alston, Anderson, Anson, Bochy, Clarke, Cox, Cronin, Dykes, Huggins, Kelly, LaRussa, Lasorda, Mack, McCarthy, McGraw, Robinson, Schoendienst, Selee, Stengel, Torre, Weaver.
   31. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:38 PM (#3013070)
And Hughie Jennings finishes it off.

Alston, Anderson, Anson, Bochy, Clarke, Cox, Cronin, Dykes, Huggins, Jennings, Kelly, LaRussa, Lasorda, Mack, McCarthy, McGraw, Robinson, Schoendienst, Selee, Stengel, Torre, Weaver.

That's 31502 wins, a .548 winning percentage, 95 pennants, and 44 World Series trophies.
   32. SoSH U at work Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:39 PM (#3013071)
You missed Bob's edit Dag.

Edit: I guess you didn't.
   33. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:46 PM (#3013074)
No Buddy Bell, huh?
   34. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: November 20, 2008 at 03:27 PM (#3013242)
Today's the deadline for guys to get added to 40 man rosters in order to protect them from next month's Rule 5 draft. One of the guys who look like they won't be protected is a fave of the intertubes, C - James Skelton - L/23 - .303/.456/.401 in 297 AB with 15 SB between Lakeland and Erie. I think his glove gets a bad rap (though it does need work), but worry that a high-walk, low-power guy will struggle as he moves up the ladder.
   35. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: November 20, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#3013317)
From the Red Sox, a pair of tweener OF, Corsaletti and Bell, are unprotected.
   36. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#3013323)
And, if anyone's curious (for partial seasons, I count it if he lasted over half a season):

50 years: Connie Mack

29 years: John McGraw

23 years: Walter Alton

19 years: Cap Anson, Bobby Cox (and counting), and Tommy Lasorda (though it's about 19.49999)

18 years: Wilbert Robinson

17 years: Sparky Anderson (with Detroit)

16 years: Fred Clarke

15 years: Tom Kelly, Joe McCarthy, Earl Weaver

14 years: Hughie Jennings

13 years: Tony LaRussa (and counting, in St Louis), Joe Cronin

12 years: Bruce Bochy, Jimmy Dykes, Miller Huggins, Red Schoendienst, Frank Selee, Casey Stengel, Joe Torre

11 years: Jim Leyland

10 years: Dusty Baker, WHitey Herzog, Lou Piniella, Bill Terry, Harry Wright

9 years: Felipe Alou, Sparky Anderson (Cincy), Billy Barnie, Lou Boudreau, Cito Gasto, Clark Griffith, Tony LaRussa (9.4999 with Oakland), Al Lopez, Bill McKechnie (Cincy), Mike Scioscia (and counting), Chuck Tanner

8 years: Frank Chance, Leo Durocher (Brkn), Leo Durcoher (NYG), Phil Garner, Mike Hargrove, Bucky Harris, Ralph Houk, Gene Mauch, Jim McAleer, Bill McKechnie (Boston), Bill Rigney, George Stallings, Patsy Tebaeu, Bobby Valentine

53 terms by 49 guys.

I think there should be a thread about the 40 man roster manipulations.

The Braves have left Eric Campbell and Kaiihuie unprotected. KK might be picked up by some team lookin for a power pinch hitter.
