Any studies on whether hitters should get the greenlight or redlight on 3-0 pitches?

Trivia question suggested by yesterday's dugout: who was the last active player who had played in a one-division-era World Series (i.e. 1968 or earlier)?

Steve Carlton (1988)?

Edit: Ted Simmons was also on that 1968 Cardinals team and played until 1988, but he didn't play in the '68 Series.

Does anyone know of any good resources about ballparks? Specifically the designs, and their relationship to changing tastes and fashions.

I already know about this great site but would appreciate any other info. I'm mostly interested in parks built since the 1950's

Help! I like baseball! I'm pretty much a novice at fantasy baseball. Last year I had a team in a random league at cbs.sportsline and it was fun & the stats were cool & I even came in first (hey, I had both Borowski & T.Jones -- lots of Saves.) Anyway, I thought I read that Yahoo would be better so I signed up for random public league in Yahoo. And the stats aren't nearly so cool -- they count BA and SB instead of OBP & SLG; and I like OBP & SLG much better (hey, I had Curtis G. last year too, lots of SLG!). Not only that, they say it is free but they charge $9.95 for StatTracker & I thought, what do I need that for, I can do without live scoring, but it turns out I need it to even see what the guys on my team did yesterday! So I don't know what to do with my fantasy life. I guess realistically my only choices are to opt out or grin&bear;it. I can change my lineup every day which is kinda fun, I have to choose between Longoria & Reynolds at 3rd base. So, next year should I just go back to cbssportsline?
(Plus now I have to find a free online spreadsheet that I can use to track stats so that I don't have to pay Yahoo $9.95. Google is way too kloodgy.)

you dont need stat-tracker for yahoo leagues to see past scoring, unless theyve changed it this year.
The stats on yahoo can be different for each league, as set up by the commish. my league uses TB and OBP instead of HR's and AVG

Sorry to disappear from the thread for so long, but yes, Steve Carlton was the last active player who had played in a pre-1969 World Series.

Now I've seen everything....they named a birth control pill after my favorite player of all time!

What an insult...he ought to sue for patent infringments.

Pretty good? It's a work of incredible genius.

With SF-AZ playing on XM this afternoon, I was taking a look at the stats thus far for that dynamic SF offense.

.227/.261/.364
.232/.292/.336

The first is the season stats for Giant pitchers. The second is for Giant infielders.

Continuing yesterday's Dugout discussion:

Mike Jorgensen vs Dock Ellis, career: 0-32, 6 BB (1 IBB), 6K, 1 SH, 1 RBI: .000/.158/.000. This is the most PA in the Retrosheet era of any batter/pitcher matchup where the batter didn't get a hit off the pitcher.

Ray Durham vs Mo Rivera (0-26, 3K, 1 GIDP) is the most PA of any batter/pitcher matchup where the batter didn't reach base.

Deron Johnson had a 32-PA hitless streak (0-29, 1 BB, 13 K, 1 SH, 1 SF, .000/.032/.000) against Ron Reed and 23 hitless ABs (6K) against Vida Blue. He's the only batter who had two pitchers against whom he went hitless in 20 or more PA.

Jeff Bagwell went hitless in 31 PAs against Scott Sullivan, of all people - 0-24 with six walks, 1 SF and 7 Ks. What's amazing about that is that three of the six walks were intentional.

I would like to point out that CC Sabathia and Eric O'Flaherty have, by themselves, knocked my team out of any chance of finishing in the faux money in my fantasy league this year. 42 runs in 24.2 IP between the two of them. That's just painful. They would have to combine for over 50 scoreless innings between them to get their joint ERA down to *5*.
