Early season stats are so much fun. Just cutting and pasting Phillies stats from BRef, look at the ridiculously bad OPS+ for most of the BRef starters (Bruntlet has played more SS than Rollins, Victorino has a 1 inning edge on Werth in CF)
C-RF
26
65 (HOWARD)
224 (Guess which perfect ballplayer this is)

Note: Cole Hamels at a 78 OPS+ is hitting better than 6 of 8 nominal starters

198
304 (Chris Snelling did get 3 PAs before hitting the disabled list)

The starters are reasonably where you'd expect them to be, this being April, but look at the feast or famine bullpen, by ERA. All have pitched between 7 and 15 innings.

I'm probably the last person on this site not to know this, but just in case, I found out last night that the old Home Run Derby TV show is on DVD now.

Very cool, although when I watched reruns on ESPN it never seemed like there were only 26 ever made.

If Giambi actually kept that up, incidentally, his 79 hits would be--far and away--the fewest ever for someone with more than 25 HR and 25 doubles. The current "leader" is Darryl Strawberry's 1989 when he had 107 hits. Right behind that is Giambi's 2006 with 25 doubles, 37 homers and 113 total hits.

The best part of Home Run Derby are the awkward attempts at conversation bewteen the announcer--who seems to be keeping score himself--and the player waiting for his turn. Good stuff! I used to watch it religiously when it was on ESPN back in the day.

Seems Chipper Jones b'day is Apr 24 ( 1972 ), and my one of my favourite cricket players, and an alltime top 5 player, shares his b'day ( 1973 though ). Heh, I thought it was pretty amazing that the two best hitters on the teams I follow ( in slightly different sports ) share their b'day.
When I have kids, I think I need to somehow make sure he/she is born on Apr 24 !!

I used to watch it back in the day whenever I could wrest control of the TV from my sisters.

Cliff Lee's ERA+ is 1563. That is insane.

Rany points out here is the first in the retrosheet era to have three straight starts in which he:

1. Pitched 8 innings or more
2. Surrendered no more than three hits
3. Surrendered no more than one walk
4. Struck out at least eight batters

I was born on the same day as Wayne Gretzky (not just the same date).

It didn't help.

They all...drove in Rickey Henderson?

(I don't know how that could be true for Vlad Guerrero or Jay Bell, but I don't claim to remember everything)

no
that group of ten is exclusive

the list of people who drove in Rickey is in the hundreds or thousands
