I was scanning the Padres roster last night and noticed that they only one Latin player on the active roster (Wil Ledezma)--that's gotta be the lowest in the majors, right? Every other team seems to have 4-5.

Question: how is it that Manny Acosta can come into a game in the ninth inning with one out and nobody on in a 6-3 game, close out the game, and not get a save...

... but then come into a game in the ninth inning with one out and nobody on in a 5-2 game, close the game out, and get a save.

Neither B-Ref nor MLB show a save in that second game, Shtick. Must be Yahoo rules :)

Because Yahoo doesn't understand the save rule. MLB doesn't credit Acosta with a save in the game (which is correct as I understand the save rule).

edit: I guess I owe Bob a Coke.

Thanks to both. My fault for using a source that calls itself "Yahoo."

Cliff Lee. Wow. Every once in a while an average pitcher has an amazing season, and this may be Lee's. He's gotten off to such a good start that if he pitches the rest of the season (180 innings) at an ERA of 3.00, he'd still finish with an ERA+ around 172.

There's an entry on The Guardian's sports blog today about sabermetrics in cricket. I found it interesting. Whether that's because it is or because I'm ignorant about cricket, I couldn't say. Just a heads up for those who might be interested.

sabermetrics in cricket

Seems like it should be secremetrics (society for english cricket research metrics :)

Or at the very least, sabremetrics ...

A few times when I access BTF I get redirected to a web page that aggressively wants me to install an anti-virus program that looks like malware to me.

Anyone else?

Mal Ware sounds like a vintage SNL character that Dan Ackroyd would play. Come down to Mal Ware's House of Computers...

And no, I haven't gotten any redirection.

I don't get the redirection, but I hate that the site craps out for 3 or 4 minutes every night at 10 PT.

Nick Piecoro with a factoid that may interest only me...

Can you believe what Cliff Lee has been doing? The guy goes into New York last night and improves to 6-0 with seven shutout innings.

And to think the Diamondbacks nearly had him. Twice.

They were close on a deal last year at the All-Star break and then again prior to the winter meetings. Both deals were built around Carlos Quentin.
