Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-30-2010

From UPI, July 30, 1980:

Houston Astros’ pitcher J.R. Richard, working out for the first time since circulatory problems were diagnosed in his right shoulder, collapsed at the Astrodome Wednesday and was rushed to a hospital where surgeons attempted to remove a blood clot in his neck.

baseball-reference question: Is there a reason that the PA field in the player value line appears to be set to games played * 4? For example, Votto has 423 pa on the year, but, the player value PA field only shows 384 (96games*4). I've checked a few other hitters and that field appears to be calculated the same way for all of them

Cristian Guzman traded to the Rangers for prospects.

5: Bah, I wanted him back in Minny.

I actually want a massive, 11-team trade, where the Twins end up with Johan Santana, Cristian Guzman, Torri Hunter, Latroy Hawkins, Jacque Jones, Corey Koskie, Chuck Knoblauch and Tom Kelly.

bbc, it was really shocking about how off the Astros management was.
We saw a similar, but less life-threatening,issue with Andrew Toney of the 76ers.

They are the two that are stuck in my mind; SSS but I think there was a racist element involved. What was so strange about their teams' reactions is that both players were such fierce competitors. (And JR had the "TEH FEAR" down a lot more than Jim Rice.)

Carlos Gonzalez's home/road splits are pretty crazy this season. Entering tonight's game in Colorado, when he hit his 20th HR:

Home: .360 / .403 / .669 15 HR's
Road: .262 / .279 / .385 4 HR's

Miguel Olivo's are even more extreme in terms of OPS; plus .202 avg on the road and .390 at home. Hawpe, Seth Smith, Giambi are => 400 pts difference between home/road OPS and Fowler just misses. No wonder their winning pct is .640 at home (again entering tonight's game) and .385 on the road.

That was a hell of an inning. Year of the pitcher!

Melvin Mora entered the game as a pinch hitter, got a hit, came around to bat again in the same inning, got 2nd hit, and then was removed in the bottom of the inning for the next pitcher. Is he credited with 2 pinch hits?

No, he was hitting for himself the second time.

That makes sense. Any idea what bb-ref will do with that when it comes to batting by position?

It will be labeled as "Other."
