I don't know.

Freddie Freeman (and Aroldis Chapman, but that's August) were the biggest names. Rocco Baldelli is back. Yonder Alonso is up after a mediocre season. Jeremy Jeffress is up. Jeremy Hellickson is up, but he was always going to be.

Possibly and no. I wouldn't call up either (save 40 man roster space).
I'm a big Jerry Sands fan, by the way (as in since he was a collegian, not that I necessarily think he's a future stud) and could not believe they started him in Great Lakes this year (rather than A+ ball).

Thanks for the transactionist link - I've wondered why there was no site like that before.

I didn't think Moustakas was having a season worthy of a call-up, either. Last I saw his triple-slash line, it was heavy on the SLG & low on the BA & OBP (tho I might be misremembering).

EDIT: scratch the BA knock; he's hitting above .290 in AAA, but w/ a Francouer-esque OBP. Still only 21, though, & he is mashing.

Yeah, the treatment of Sands is very strange. As a 22 year-old they gave him 69 games at single-A despite a 333/432/646 line. Getting drafted in the 25th round must really hurt your standing in an organization.

And "Chinaman" is not the preferred nomenclature. "Asian-American" dude.

I didn't think Moustakas was having a season worthy of a call-up, either.
Oh, I very much do think he's played well enough for one. I just wouldn't burn a 40-man spot on someone who doesn't need to be protected yet.

Sands: You could argue that he hadn't dominated the Midwest League yet, but he hit .264/.352/.509 (using minor leaguesplits) there after his promotion from Ogden ... I think he was ready. I'm also of the camp that he's fine in RF, doesn't need to play first.
More optimistically, he hit .203 (with walks and pop) in the GCL as a 25th round college guy his first season - it wouldn't have been a shock had they cut him at that point.

Pagan: I'll guess 'no'.

I don't mean the batting order - I mean look who is playing where. The 38-year-old (only one month from turning 39) at third played his only CG at third that day. And check out the 35-year-old at short (who played his first game at that position two weeks earlier).

Bizarre.

Even on the last day of the season, even with teams that are playing for nothing, a lot of teams send out their regular lineup and try their best. And sometimes, teams don't.

Other scrubeenie Philadelphia lineups after they'd just clinched a division are vaguely in my memory, so I looked up some details. 1 October 1978 was a stellar bunch:

LF Kerry Dinneen
2B Bud Harrelson
1B Pete Mackanin
RF Orlando Gonzalez
3B Jim Morrison
CF Lonnie Smith
C Barry Foote
SS Todd Cruz

Aside from Foote (an ordinary second catcher), the elderly Harrelson, and the infant Smith, I don't even remember the rest of them, and I was a pretty serious fan of those Phillies.

Willie Stargell was the Pirates' leadoff hitter that day.

Aside from Foote (an ordinary second catcher), the elderly Harrelson, and the infant Smith, I don't even remember the rest of them, and I was a pretty serious fan of those Phillies.

Mackanin played for Montreal (and others), mostly at 2B and SS; I think he was a coach for different teams for quite a long time.

Cruz played for the Mariners and a couple of other AL teams.

Morrison was the regular 3B for the White Sox in 1980 (had 666 PA's) and had a long career as a semi-regular/backup infielder throughout the 1980's. Morrison was actually a pretty decent hitter; he had a career OPS+ of 98 in nearly 3700 PA's.

Gonzalez and Dineen never played very much although it looks like Dineen may have lost his career due to injury or something. He had pretty good numbers in limited trials with the Yankees and then the Phillies, and then was gone at age 25.

For a lot of the top minor leaguers, they're also involved in minor league pennant races, and the minor league affiliates would prefer to keep their best players around for those games and the minor league playoffs. It's not a great idea to piss off your affiliates.
