Pujols = David Wright + ????

Danup at Getupbaby.net is looking at streakiness. He started with Troy Glaus, whose recent cold streak ignited the project, then turned to Pujols, “the most consistent-est player who ever did consist.”

His method, imperfect but interesting, is to strip out the player’s five hottest weeks and see what you’re left with. In the case of Pujols, here’s what you get:

Q: How do you get Albert Pujols? A: Just add five weeks of a .500 batting average to David Wright! Pujols’s .970 OPS [without those five weeks] is 64% of his peak OPS.

I wonder if that'd be intuitive enough for BBWAA to figure out if you word it better.

David Wright would have to hit .500 for 5 weeks straight to be as good as Pujols.

Wow--didn't expect a Clutch Hit. My StatCounter thanks you.

Before the Sizable Mets Contingent gets here, let me present this piece with the disclaimer that it was strictly a for-fun endeavor and I am well aware of the necessary positional adjustments etc. David Wright was just the first .400/.530-ish guy that came into my head.

I was curious to see what he'd look like without his 5 worst weeks. Of course I'm too lazy to pinpoint his 5 worst week stretch so I took his worst month.

The best thing about that is that Pujols' worst month was either June, when he hit 302/444/558 or July when he hit 347/413/564.

It was at this point I realized how silly this exercise was. The man's worst month was a 978 OPS, 155 OPS+ with a 347 BA. That OPS+ would be good for 3rd in the league. The man is a god.

(On a side note, I take it the author took 5 individual weeks not worst 5 week continuous stretch?)

Before the Sizable Mets Contingent...

So's your mom.

(That's a recurring inside joke on the site lately, btw.)

It might be interesting to start with Pujols, do this, and then go backwards until you get to, er, I dunno, Argenis Reyes.

What would you have to add to a superduperstar like A-rod to match Pujols?

Pujols really is stunning.

Wait, that really doesn't work, does it?

Fortunately you're right, since if Pujols was as good as Pedroia, the Cardinals would be in fifth place instead of 4.5 back in the wild card "race."

last year, neither one was as good as Ellsbury, either, right Kevin? :)

Not if you keep announcing it, it's not.

Ellsbury is Pujols's best five weeks. Every day.

Is Pedroia better than Ellsbury?

Is Pedroia better than Ellsbury?

In the War Games remake, that will be the stumper question for Joshua.
