Randy Johnson ties Clemens on strikeout list

Concrete and Clay feet?...Big Unit 4 + 2 + 4,666!

Randy Johnson took another large step on his road to Cooperstown on Thursday night, tying Roger Clemens for second place on the all-time list of career strikeouts.

With his ninth strikeout of the night against the Giants and No. 4,672 of his career.

Johnson tied Clemens with his third strikeout of Daniel Ortmeier, leading off the seventh, earning him his first roar from the Chase Field crowd of 21,037.

That might not have been the end of the Big Unit’s milestone march of the evening: He held a 3-2 lead for what would be the 289th win of his career, breaking his tie with Tommy John for No. 25 on that all-time list.

Nolan Ryan sits safely atop the career list for strikeouts, with 5,714.

According to Gameday, his fastball topped out at 92 and was sitting at around 90, which indicates that he has adapted to the decline in his velocity far more than when he was a Yankee.

The NL West is pretty bad right now. The Diamondbacks are the only team above .500 and even they are slumping pretty badly right now.

I'm waiting for people to realize that not all of the Giants' wins can be blamed on the other team slumping. I notice nobody's talking about Zito in this one.

Man, Benji Molina and Aaron Rowand are mashing so far this season. A combined .337/.389/.535. That's impressive. Zito's still having an awful season. The Giants are a bad team but they won't be historically bad. They have some good young pitching and too many solid players to be really, really bad. But they still aren't very good. They need to be smart and sell high on Molina.

In sort of similar news, I noticed today that Ichiro now has a combined total of 2,935 hits in MLB and NPB, which is the same number of hits as the leading player on BB-Ref's "active" list, Barry Bonds, currently has.

He sits even more safely atop the career list for walks allowed, with 2,795, a full 50% more than the #2 guy.

Any chance Ichiro's NPB and MLB hit total surpasses Rose? He seems to be maintaining his health pretty well. If he can play until full time until his early 40's, it seems to be a real possibility.

This is true. He's throwing more split fingers than ever before. But his velocity was better with the Yankees then it is now. At least in 2005. Per his Fan Graphs Page his avg FB velocity is down 1.6 MPH since 2005. He pitched almost all of 2006 with a herniated disc. I don't know how you even pitch with that, let alone "adapt"

His slider has looked great the last couple of games.

(The Giants) need to be smart and sell high on Molina.

FWIW, he has a complete no-trade clause. He probably wouldn't waive it without getting a contract extension (he is signed through 2009) in return.
