Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back…

The Tampa Bay Rays have re-signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one-year major league contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Kapler, 34, appeared in 99 games at all three outfield positions for the Rays in 2009, hitting .239 with eight home runs, 32 RBI, 15 doubles and five stolen bases.

There were games this year with Krapler in CF for the Rays?

I think I'd put him as no better than third in depth at that position on that team. Maybe fourth.

Kapler has been surprisingly useful since un-retiring. He's a legitimately nice bench player at this point. For the Rays to get a guy who can spot start at 3 positions without hurting them for only $1 million is a great deal.
Nobody was as surprised as I was when Kapler played well for the Brewers in 2008 but he followed it up with another good year with Tampa Bay. Eventually he'll go back to being terrible like he was for the Red Sox but he's been worth well over $1 million each of the past 2 years.

He's a solid guy for them to re-sign. His middling overall numbers are dragged down by an abysmal .150/.190/.167 line against RHP. He hit .276/.379/.552 against LHP this season. That's a great platoon bat with a good glove for a reasonable price.

Are we positive that this is the same Gabe Kapler that retired a few years back?

Effin' Kapler. Interrupting the postseason to announce this.

Yeah, I suspect he signed it within minutes of it coming off his agent's fax machine, before the Rays could change their minds.
