Red Sox Monster: Schilling: ‘I don’t think I deserve to be in the Hall of Fame’

Or as novelist turned Superbasist, Honoré de Balzack Wheat, once said…“Modesty is the conscience of the bloody red sock.”

Building on his popular appearances on WEEI Radio as “Curt in the Car,” Curt Schilling made his debut as an in-studio analyst on WEEI’s “Big Show” this afternoon, weighing in on everything from Jason Varitek’s future (predictable answer) to playing with Manny Ramirez (predictable answer).

Then, Schilling said something a little more jarring. He said he doesn’t belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame:

“I feel very good about what I was able to do, I’m very proud of my career,” Schilling said when posed the question by a caller. “I did [20] years—far more than I ever expected. But I played with Randy Johnson, I played with Pedro Martinez, I played with Dale Murphy. I played with guys that have [Cy Young Award] plaques. I’d like to think I did well. I’d like to think that, if I had a must-win game, the guys I played with would want me to have the ball. But no, I don’t think I deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.”

Well. I’ll. Be. Damned.

Say what you want about Schilling. Call him a loudmouth, a blowhard, or a computer nerd of epic proportions.

It’s statements such as these that make him different than your average ballplayer, throwing a from-the-gut statement out there that could easily be used against him in the future. Moreover, he makes a pitch for two teammates, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez, whom he easily compared favorably to when he was in his prime.

Is he officially retired?

Wow. I was with him when he asked people to call Schilling a loudmouth and a blowhard, but he sure went off the rails quickly by saying Schilling easily compares favorably to Pedro and Randy. I even read the article to see if there was some sort of lame attempt to defend what the author had to realize was a controversial (at best) statement. Clutch postseason? Peak argument? During years he pitched on the same team as Randy or Pedro? Nope. He just mentions casually that Curt Schilling "easily compared favorably" to Randy and Pedro.

Wow.

For the record, I'm still undecided about Schilling as a hall of famer. He definitely has the peak and has the sort of postseason resume that deserves extra credit. But that said, how can anyone make the statement that Curt Schilling easily compares favorably to Pedro and Randy as casually as saying Manny Ramirez easily compares favorably to Bobby Abreu or Jonathan Papelbon easily compares favorably to Hideki Okajima? Wow.

The only thing I can think of is he's a) just comparing the times the guys were teammates, and b) he doesn't really understand what favorably means. While he does compare favorably to Pedro in their limited engagement as teammates, there's no way you can look at their numbers as Diamondbacks and suggest Schilling was better than Randy, or even his equal (except the final season). The best you can say is they made a great 1-2 punch.

That being said, his rather forceful assesment of his HoF candidacy is not just unusual, but undeniably underselling his careeer.

If you had to pick one, who would you choose between Schilling and Blyleven?

For the HOF? Blyleven.
   7. Chase Insteadman Wannabe Posted: January 23, 2009 at 08:13 AM (#3058615)
Personally I would take Blyleven in a heartbeat. Schilling's peak may have been higher, but I don't see an argument to make up for Blyleven's 1700 innings pitched advantage. My guess is that if I took the time to sit down and rank the non-hall of fame pitchers I would have Schilling just over the line for my personal hall. (Albeit begrudgingly so. I'm still a Yankee fan.) But insomnia only gets a certain level of time commitment to lurking on baseball and soccer websites. That said I'm 100% sure he would rank behind Blyleven on my list.

But why would you ever "have to" choose only one?

For career stats: Blyleven, with his 1700 extra innings.

For peak performance: Schilling, with his rate stats and his monster postseason performances. Blyleven's were also very good, but not on Schilling's level.

For the HoF inner circle: Neither. You'd have to combine Schilling's peak with Blyleven's endurance to get to that.

But for the Hall of Fame: Both, without any reservation.

I hate Curt Schilling, but he's a HOFer, with no hesitation, from me. He's a very good to excellent pitcher who also had 2 of the greatest and most memorable pitching postseasons of all time. And a bunch of other very good postseason games.

Did Schilling join the cast of Drawn Together yet?

And yeah, I think he's in. That will be a fun speech. So...we'll have Maddux, Kent, Frank Thomas, Curt Schilling for sure as newcomers on the same ballot. Possibly Glavine and Pedro, as well. Anyone I'm forgetting?
   12. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: January 23, 2009 at 02:25 PM (#3058710)
If there was an induction like that, I might go up there for it. So would everyone else, of course . . .

I don't understand this from a Sox fan.

Schilling didn't actually pitch last season, so he'll be on the ballot the year before Maddux, Kent and gang. In fact, barring a shocking turn of events, Schilling and Bonds will debut the same year.

But he was under contract. Does that matter? I assume he was on the DL all year.
   16. flournoy Posted: January 23, 2009 at 02:34 PM (#3058722)
Doesn't matter. The measurement is five years since an appearance in a major league game, not a contract.

Has Frank Thomas officially retired?

I don't think it matters, the Hall of Fame says that:

Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.

Schilling was "otherwise connected with baseball" but he wasn't an active player.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Has Frank Thomas officially retired?

I think he has, but I'm not sure if he knows it yet.

2012's class is pathetic compare to the years around it... but really the 11-15 class is going to be ridiculasly awsome.

i think i figured out the "favorably to" in the pedro part...schilling was still in his "prime" in 04, whereas pedro had his "worst" year as a red sox:
w-l/era/whip/era+, k/bb
21-6/3.26/1.062/150, 203/35 vs 16-9/3.90/1.171/125, 227/61

as for the randy years, the only thing i could come up with was tied in wins, and half the walks. of course, even with half the walks, randy was putting up better whip numbers =P and of course, randy had the better ks and the 2 cys (both to which curt finished 2nd =P). and even trying to find that was painfully hard =P oh yeah, rj got shelled (10h, 5 er in 6ip) in the 02 nlds whereas schilling held his own (7h 1 er, 7 ip). of course, we all know what happened in 01...

i forgot that they both got injured in '03.
