Report: Blackhawks to play Wings at Wrigley

The Blackhawks are expected to play the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field in January in the NHL’s Winter Classic, Comcast SportsNet reported Wednesday night, with an official announcement perhaps coming this week.

Hawks president John McDonough has been pushing for an outdoor game after the success of this season’s Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium. A league-record 71,217 fans saw the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Sabres 2-1 in a shootout.

The NHL is going to kill the novelty of this game.

Does it really need to be novel, though? If something's really awesome, why not do it frequently? (Not to Paul Terry extremes, mind you ...)

Once a year isn't going to kill anything. Once a year makes it a tradition is all.

If a puck goes into the bleachers will the fans throw it back?

Why wouldn't they put this at Soldier Field and push for another huge crowd rather than the 40K max at Wrigley? Although I suppose the history of Wrigley does make it a media savvy choice. I don't think it will be a pleasant game to attend. Most of the lower box seats will be worthless since they won't be high enough to see over the portable boards. The rooftops would be pretty cool though.

If this is a once a year event, then that means there will be no Ranger game at Yankee Stadium. I tend to think there will be more than one occurence of this type of game next season.

No, if the game is played in Chicago, it is because there will not be a Ranger game in Yankee Stadium.

I'd just like to say that if I had a uterus I would bear Jonathan Towes' child.

I think its Chicago or bust... there were some infrastructure issues with building a rink in Yankee Stadium apparently.

There are rumors of a Bobby Orr jersey buried there somewhere.

"I think its Chicago or bust..." Nope. We're gonna get the Keys To The City...

Wow, second NHL thread in two days... I have to say I'm impressed.

Ho, and there won't be a game next year at Yankee Stadium because the NHL wants to keep it one game a year only.

Next year, the Montréal Canadiens will celebrate their 100th birthday and the team wanted to play outside but the NHL did not want. Now, one of the problem might have been that there are NO stadium in Montreal to play an outside game into... The Big "O" has a roof and is closed during the winter anyway, and Molson Stadium (home of the CFL Alouettes) seems a little small for such an event.

I'm so there.

Ironically, this will be only my second game at Wrigley, the first being this one. (Met Bill James there, too.)

Huh. Millions spent on a new field last offseason and you want to throw a hockey game on it?

Will Ferris Bueller be there?

I must be strange, because when I go to a hockey game, I want to be able to see the game. The sightlines in a baseball stadium are going to be even worse than the ones in a football stadium.
