Reporting from the Braves Wine Cellar

The creative minds at Charity Wines and Charity Hop—the Mass.-based companies who brought you Vintage Papi (David Ortiz), Schilling Schardonnay, Manny Being Merlot and Caberknuckle (Tim Wakefield)—are now extending their “Longball Cellars” brand to include the Braves.
...

[Chipper] Jones, who leads the majors batting .410, was asked if he was a “chardonnay guy,” to which he replied, laughing, tugging at the sunglasses dangling from his collar, “Uh, not so much.”

Do they serve wine at Hooters?

Chardonnay would be a stripper in Rhode Island, or else someone who is big, bold and overrated. Or else someone who is overflavored by oak barrels and the best science America can throw at him. I'll let others guess who that is. Chipper might be something like a Nero D'Avola -- consistent, a bit rough, generally a bargain, quite good.

Albert Pujols is a Barolo, a man made of Nebbiolo, the god of grapes.

Albert can't be a Barolo. If anything somebody like Luis Gonzalez might be a Barolo. Albert is probably a big California Cab but even that is a stretch. Wine is not a good metaphor for players who are great right off the bat and stay great as they age. Maybe Pujols could be a DRC, maybe.

The Texas Ranger Cellars:

Kevin Reimer Strawberry Ripple '92: Hard to catch its elusive qualities.

Kenny Rogers Spumante '05: Explosive; point away from bystanders.

Bobby Witt Table White '86: Walked upon by the feet of many treaders.

Alex Rodriguez Chateau Lafite '03: Does not mix well with younger wines.

I was at Turner Field yesterday with a few dozen other wine tasters at the 755 Club, located above the seats in left field and named after the most famous home run in MLB history.

No, not so much.

There are MANY wines that taste fantastic at an early age and then proceed to get even better.

The entire 2005 Bordeaux vintage is a recent example.

And for anyone curious try a 2005 Chateau Mylord for starters. 20 bucks.

And stored properly you can enjoy it for some time. Recommended optimal temp is 57 F but mostly keep it in a place away from the sun and big temperature swings.

I state all this first to encourage folks to try some great wine that is reasonably priced.

Of course, some "non-Albert" wines that are good and even cheaper include Spanish wines like a 2006 Atteca or a 2006 Butterfly Riesling.

And that's just for starters. Could name 25 more under 20 bucks. Could name 15 under 15.

I encourage wine knowledge. Good stuff.
