Resurgent Rockies take series with LA

DENVER—The Rockies are playing their best baseball of the year, and it might be just in time to save their season.

Colorado jumped out early against the Dodgers and held on for a 5-3 win on an overcast Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field. The victory capped a 6-1 homestand and moved the Rockies within 6 1/2 games of the National League West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks.

If the Cubs can beat the Diamondbacks tonight, that will mean two things: The Rockies will be within six games of first place, and they will have a total of four games left against teams that have winning records. Four.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks do have nine games left against each other, six of them in Colorado. Given the way this season started, if the six Septmeber games between the two turn out to be meaningful at all, that has to be considered a success for the Rox.

I hope they can keep it up, Boots, so I can say I was there the night they turned it around (Aaron Cook's incredibly efficient 79-pitch shutout over the Padres, ending the 8-game losing streak). Also, since it was 5-year-old son's first big league game, he's become a bit of a Rox fan since then.

At this point, people aren't even hoping for another pennant. They just want the team to get back in the race, and to have some fun in September. We're still not there yet, but at least it seems possible.

One reason is Ubaldo Jimenez, who has a 3.42 ERA over his last 17 starts, and a 2.28 ERA in his last nine starts. Between him, Cook, and hopefully Jeff Francis, who is due back next week, we've got the makings of a quality starting rotation.

It's amazing how positive the standings can look when you can say "Well, if we win 20 in a row again..."

I predict this number will be a lot higher than four after those teams finish playing the Rocks...

As we get closer to the end of the season, where the games are mostly inside the divisions, aren't all the NL West teams going to be able to say that?

"Look! We have no games left against teams with winning records!"

Having seen Jimenez and Cook pitch twice each against the Mets recently, I can say that Jimenez is *nasty*, some of the best stuff from any opposing pitcher this year. Cook is very good as well, not impossible to hit, but definitely a rotation anchor type.

The DBacks have 10 games left against teams with winning records. Out of 62 games. Curse you Selig for this most brutal schedule!

BTW, what does this say about the Dodgers? At this point, Juan Pierre can't come back soon enough for them.
