Ripken chosen as special envoy to State Department

Is there no stopping him!

Hall of Fame newcomer Cal Ripken Jr. was chosen by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to promote baseball around the world.

Rice on Monday will make Ripken a Special Sports Envoy to the Department of State, the public relations firm that represents Ripken, Maroon PR, said in a statement Thursday.

The former Baltimore Orioles star will be asked to help the game grow at the grass-roots level. Ripken will reach out to a worldwide audience of young people; his first trip will be to China this fall.

Yes, there's no better place than the State Department to get things to start growing at the grass-roots level.

Here in my home country of Panama, the U.S. Consulate decided not to give a visa to 6 players and a coach of the Panamanian basketball team, which was to play an olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

The reason given is that the players and coach did not prove that they have sufficient means ($$$), and were a threat to stay in the U.S.

This has been all the rage yesterday and today, and though I suspect this will get cleared up soon, you have to wonder if similar things won't happen with some of the young baseball players from countries like Cina.

See, now this drives me crazy. There's hundreds, if not thousands of illegals crossing the Mexican border every day, and instead of cracking down on that, they focus on this, and on prosecuting border patrol agents shooting at a suspect resisting arrest.

Last I heard, that wasn't a capital crime.

I saw the headline, right under the Destruction of the National Pasttime thread, and thought for sure this was another Onion link.

Does his mission include promoting baseball in the inner cities of this country? If not, it should.

Yeah, although I suppose Ripken might have some difficulty with that mission...

If by "resisting arrest," you mean "running away."

Things got hot in El Salvador
CIA got caught and couldn't do no more
He's got diplomatic immunity
He's got a lethal weapon that nobody sees
Looks like another threat to world peace
For the envoy

"Hello, I'm Cal Ripken. The US government lost its credibility so it's borrowing some of mine."

He'd be a better envoy if he'd take a day off once in a while.

We successfully spread democracy around the world, it only follows that baseball should be next.

After that - fatty foods!

Taiwan's I think Middle School baseball team have ALL been denied Visas to compete in the World Tourney in Venezuela because Hugo Chavez wants to orally fellate Hu JinTao.

There's a lot of fertilizer to go around in Gitmo... especially after they make prisoners assume the position for a couple weeks.

You mean there are places on Earth where you can't get American junk food? Antarctica?

I wouldn't be surprised if the most eaten food in Antarctica is microwaved Pizza.
