Rocky start puzzles Pirates’ Matt Morris

“A bull, a stud, a tiger, a bulldog, a stallion--a whole zoo in one pitcher! Our Matty, always a Cardinal in our hearts.” ( hilaripusiness from the Matt Morris page)

Every time Matt Morris takes the mound, he’s hoping to discover why he has struggled so much this year. Three starts into the season, and all he and the Pirates’ coaching staff have are more questions.

..."It’s not puzzling. It doesn’t matter what pitch you throw, it’s just location and how sharp it is,” Morris said. “The second time around and the third time around, my location has been off, so that’s where the trouble has been.”

..."You’ve just got to continue with what you’re doing in the first,” Morris said. “I don’t know why I’m not as sharp later on, but obviously them seeing more pitches as the game goes on gives them an advantage, so the location’s really important at that point.”

Morris and pitching coach Jeff Andrews have gone over every possible scenario and perused hours of video, to no avail.  “It’s something that you don’t want to stop looking for answers and stop looking for solutions and keep analyzing,” Andrews said. “He remained aggressive and was very efficient through the first three innings (Tuesday). He went back out and had the same attitude and approach he had the first three innings. It just didn’t work.”

I think the problem might just be that he's not very good anymore, and hasn't been for several years.

Which is too bad, because I always liked the guy.

I think this falls under the heading of "you can't polish a turd".

His fastballs in his second start were getting misidentified by the online gametracker as changeups.

One wonders if Mr. Andrews is trying to figure out how to say it.

ERA+ last 4 seasons:
90
103
90
90

Actually he's been really bad since joining the Pirates
His K-rate by year 2001-08:
7.70
7.32
6.27
5.84
5.47
5.08
4.62
3.24

Seems like there's a readily discernable pattern there
A pitcher steadily losing his stuff, A pitcher who in 3 of his last 4 season was a perfectly adequate 4th/5th starter
But one absolute;y no one wanted- until Littlefield came along.

What I read at the time was that DL had the money to draft and sign Wieters, but chose not to, he reached for someone who would be an easy sign, took the Wieters money and moved it to his MLB roster side so to speak, added it to whatever discretionary funds he had left, and blew it on Morris.

If you are a paranoid Pirates fan you almost have to ask yourself if DL knew he was on the way out and did all this to give someone the finger?

Thanks goodness they passed on that 100 million dollar contact he tried to float on them a couple years back. Only a crazy fool of an organization would throw that kind of money at a hard-worked soft-tosser with declining K/increasing BB rates.

Yes, it would be a terrible situation, rooting for a team that could do something like that.

jpwf -

if littlefield did that i wouldn't blame him a bit. especially having to keep mouth shut while deliberately putting a lousy product out there because his orders were FIRST to make sure the owners got their 30 mill a year and to get some major leaguer with a recognizeable name to trade at the deadline

it must be hard to have to think - it don't matter how BAD the team/farm is, just get bodies so as the owners can get their 30 mill a year

Ah, incompetence or malice - the eternal Littlefield conundrum.

It's too bad Littlefield isn't around to sign him for a couple more years. I'd be curious to see whether this could go below zero.

Hey Tracshel was down to 3.18 last year
Nate Cornejo was at 2.12 in 2003

looking at every pitcher 2004-07, 90+ip, k/9 less than 3.75
19 seasons (a few guys make the list more than once)
The jury is still out on the guys who couldn't miss bats in 2007, but basically unless your name is Silva or Wang, you are either not going to be in the MLB a year or 2 after your low K season or you are going to suck big time

But Trachsel was never above about 4 or so. Morris' steady decline, stretched over so many years, has its own beautiful rhythm. It's probably matched by the dropping velocity on his notfastball--twin graphs would look great. And it looks like he may have picked up some momentum the last couple years. I can't help wanting to see where it's going to lead.

But Trachsel was never above about 4 or so.

His career mark is 5.76
Here's Trachsel from 2001 onward:
7.45
5.43
4.87
5.19
5.84
4.31
3.19
2.57

Not the nice smooth Morris trendline, but same general direction
