Rosenthal: Dodgers out of mix for Sabathia, Brewers close?

The latest Robothalamuse…

The Los Angeles Dodgers are out of the running for C.C. Sabathia, according to a major-league source, an indication that the Milwaukee Brewers may be nearing a trade for the Indians’ left-hander.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays also are bidding for Sabathia, but neither of those clubs are expected to top the Brewers’ offer.

Class AA outfielder Matt LaPorta is the centerpeice of the Brewers’ proposal. The Indians also are expected to receive two more prospects in the deal.

LaPorta, a right-handed slugger who is below-average defensively, would be a better fit for the American League. He was the Brewers’ first-round pick in 2007, and played first base at Florida, but the Brewers converted him to left field — a position occupied by Ryan Braun, who is signed through 2015. The Indians badly need power. Center fielder Grady Sizemore leads the AL with 22 home runs, but designated hitter Travis Hafner hit only four before going on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain on May 30 and catcher Victor Martinez had zero before going on the DL June 12 with a right-elbow injury.

Top two comments on the article:

"GOOD!If CC can't lose that belly, his trips around the bases will be far worse than the Brewers could imagine.DEM BUMS will be better off trading for a good shortstop, like Pitt's Wilson.NOMAR can still contribute a lot at 3b.Playing ss is too much for his fragile body to endure on a steady basis.Wilson will not cost LA nearly as much as CC would.GO DODGERS.

Crap.

At least the Cardinals got to taste second for a while.

Didn't realize he was a .300/.317/.475 hitter, though I knew he had power.

Brewers want to make Fielder feel good about his weight!

Crispix, you somehow missed the top comment...and you're fortunate.

Am very happy for the Brewers. They've always been my second favoritest NL team, and now one of my two NL teams will make the playoffs!

CBS Sportsline: Knobler: C.C. could go today, maybe to Brewers

The Indians were telling teams today that it's "highly improbable" that C.C. Sabathia will make his next scheduled start for them. While Sabathia is still listed as the Indians' starting pitcher for their Tuesday night game in Detroit, it appears almost certain that he'll be traded before then.

The destination could well be Milwaukee. The Dodgers had been involved as recently as Sunday morning, but as of Sunday afternoon a baseball source familiar with the talks said that the Dodgers are out of it. While there was talk in the baseball world that the Phillies could make a late push, it seems likely that their offer will fall short.

I think the main deal of LaPorta for CC is agreed upon, they are just negotiating what other two players will be going to the Tribe. The Brewers want this done today so that CC can be in Milwaukee and start Tuesday's game so that he will have two starts before the ASB.

Perhaps tellingly, LaPorta is not in the lineup for Huntsville tonight. Neither is Michael Brantley. Escobar is (Gamel, too).

Michael Brantley is injured and won't be back for a week and a half or so. He was going to be out of the lineup anyway, which isn't to say he couldn't be included in the trade.

Just based on what I saw during LaPorta's tenure in Florida, I think Matt would be a thoroughly solid defensive first baseman. The Indians might be committed to Garko at first, but I don't think LaPorta's confined to the DH slot.

Sabathia should come to the NL and stay -- he's got a mean swing.

As a Tiger fan tired of seeing Renteria flail and be an out machine...and we all know he does better in the NL...maybe the Dodgers would like to think of him as an option....

Deal is close. Not really any news, other than confirmation that the Brewers want to wrap this up today and that Cain will not be one of the OF included.

exciting. now we just have to hope Doug didn't get bamboozled like he did in his deadline deal last year. Even if he did though, it will still be an exciting remainder of 2008.
