Rosenthal: Angels could make run at Santana

-- One question baseball people are asking: Why would the Red Sox allow their pursuit of Santana to stall over center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury? Most scouts project Ellsbury to be good and maybe very good, but not a star. What’s more, his trade value might never be higher after his outstanding performance in high-profile games in September and October. “A lot of hype,” one scout says.

-- The Mets remain aggressive on free-agent right-hander Livan Hernandez, and some believe GM Omar Minaya is interested in signing outfielder Jose Guillen if he trades Lastings Milledge and/or Carlos Gomez. Others with knowledge of the Mets’ plans say there is no way that they will pursue Guillen, who is one of the Royals’ primary targets.

-- The Twins are set to announce the signing of right-hander R.A. Dickey to a minor league contract. Dickey, 33, went 13-6 with a 3.72 ERA last season for the Brewers’ Class AAA affiliate in Nashville. The Twins believe his hard knuckleball might play well in the Metrodome.

Omar, don't do that to me.

Edit: Btw, I don't really believe this. If you're his agent, it's very believable that Omar would be interested in him considering their past. It's a good way to get leverage.

Omar usually speaks his mind to the press and he said he didn't see himself signing a free agent pitcher.

The headline is a little misleading. In the body of the article Rosenthal concludes that they probably won't be making a run at Santana, though they have the parts if they wanted to.

The Angels should start making an initial run at Santana and/or Tejada. Right now the Marlins have all the leverage. If it becomes evident that the Angels are willing to go elsewhere, maybe the Fish come down with their demands and a deal can get done. If not, the Angels would still have all their chips for either Santana or Tejada, and even if they do nothing, they're still better than they were two weeks ago.

Can you picture the staff meeting where this idea was offered?

"Yeah, Dickey, from Milwaukee. He may still have something."
"You think so?"
"Well his knuckleball is hard, so it'll play better indoors."
"Seriously? What does that mean?"
"Um..."
"Well let's try him anyway. But if anyone gives me crap about this I'm telling them you scouted him."

Yeah, I don't see the stock on Jacoby Ellsbury or Ian Kennedy getting much higher than they are right now.

Newly acquired Michael Bourn and Matsui likely would be the Astros' 1-2 hitters. The team remains short on pitching.

This tickled me. Did Robo expect people to read the first sentence and say, "Wow, the Astros are looking like worldbeaters in 2008!"?

"No, no ... they're short on pitching. I know the top of that lineup is sweet, but let's calm down people! Sorry to be the splash of cold water in your face after telling you about their lineup's dynamic 1-2 punch."

The White Sox have backed off free-agent center fielder Aaron Rowand because they prefer to sign him for four rather than five years, according to a source with knowledge of their thinking. The Sox are among the teams interested in Japanese free-agent outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, a rival GM says, and also are exploring a possible deal for Pirates left fielder Jason Bay.

I don't know anything about Fukudome, so I can't comment on him. Bay dropping off the face of the earth in the last 2/3 of '07 is disconcerting.
