Rosenthal: Choiceless Padres likely to start Gerut in left

And some sharp Around the Horn potentiometer from Robothol…

--One scout says that Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano looked afraid to throw his slider in his most recent Grapefruit League outing. But Smith, the Twins’ G.M., says he is pleased with the progress shown by Liriano, who is just 15 months removed from elbow-ligament transplant surgery. “He’s got to shake some rust off,” Smith says. “Anyone who thought he’d come in throwing 95 mph with the nasty stuff he had two years ago is not being realistic.” Liriano’s velocity is up to 88 to 92 mph ...

--A rival executive says of Tigers left-hander Dontrelle Willis, “He looks like a different pitcher. I’ve always thought of him as a guy who just goes out there slinging it. But when I saw him, he was pitching. It looked like he had calmed down his delivery in an effort to make better pitches.” Too bad Willis can’t help the Tigers out of the bullpen, too ...

--Center fielder Shane Victorino is one of the Phillies who appears too complacent to manager Charlie Manuel. “He thinks he’s Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard, but he’s not,” one scout says of Victorino. “He talks more trash than Muhammad Ali.” Victorino, 27, is a good-natured sort who figures to straighten out, and the Phillies’ other position players should, too. The team’s pitching remains a far greater concern ...

"He talks more trash than Muhammad Ali."

Trash talking in baseball? When does that happen...at the weigh in before the ballgame?

One of our scouts, Van Smith, said, 'The guy is out there and available. He's back to the Jody Gerut of old. Sign him,"' Padres general manager Kevin Towers recalls.

If only there were a good FA LF...

"Braves' Schafer: Coming fast"

Ah, the ol' Quick Draw McGraw, eh? I think they have medication for that now.

"The Mariners might carry 11 pitchers in order to keep right-handed hitting outfielders Mike Morse and Charlton Jimerson, both of whom are out of options."

Since when did it become news that a team is only carrying 11 pitchers? Man, I miss the '80s.

The Jody Gerut of old?

Seems a weird thing to say about a player who had one good fluke season 5 years ago. His minor league career high in homers is 11. If perfectly healthy he's a backup outfielder at best. And he hasn't played in the majors or minors the last two seasons.

But yeah, it's not like there are any superstar left fielders still looking for a job.

Is Gerut a guy that bb-chick had a crush on? I just assumed he was playing at Pittsburgh the last two years. If you want to hide from me, that's a good place. I pay more attention to the NL West and those guys are in the wrong league and I'm usually in bed by first pitch.

For instance, I wansn't aware that Emil Brown was 32. I had no idea that he played in Pittsburgh.
   7. The District Attorney Posted: March 19, 2008 at 09:54 AM (#2715295)
It'd make a lot more sense to play Chase Headley or even Jeff DaVanon out there, but jeez, I didn't realize even Rosenthal cared who's going to fill in the Padre outfield for a week or two because a guy is hurt.

Sure, if by "playing" you mean "embroiled in a bitter conflict with the team's medical staff".

And for the record, I still think there's room for a Nady deal with the Padres.

Yeah, I caught up with everything Gerut today.

Seriously, I mean why make the guy change positions if you're not going to use him over Jody freakin Gerut?
   12. AROM Posted: March 19, 2008 at 10:24 AM (#2715325)
Maybe Headley just isn't ready?

Chase Headley, the Padres' top hitting prospect who converted from third base to left field this spring, has batted .394 with three homers in 33 at-bats this spring, but is expected to start at Class AAA.

Nope, it's 100% about cost control and delaying free agency.

Well, Gerut hit 22, and was a better all around hitter.

Charlie Kerfeld got more ROY votes than Barry Bonds.
   15. JPWF13 Posted: March 19, 2008 at 10:55 AM (#2715355)
My first thought looking at the headline, was what about Hairston, then I read the article:
If center fielder Jim Edmonds recovers from his calf strain in time for Opening Day, the Padres likely will platoon Gerut, a left-handed hitter, with Scott Hairston, who hits from the right side.

If Edmonds opens the season on the disabled list, Hairston will shift to center and Gerut will stay in left.

Hairston in CF and Gerut on LF, man oh man, that'll give their pitchers some serious heartburn
   16. Cowboy Popup Posted: March 19, 2008 at 10:55 AM (#2715356)
Charlie Kerfeld got more ROY votes than Barry Bonds.

Bob Hamelin smoked Manny Ramirez. Heck, Angel Berroa won it the Gerut-Teixeira year.

I like the ROY award.
   17. JJ1986 Posted: March 19, 2008 at 10:57 AM (#2715360)
Hairston in center is scarier to me than Gerut in left. The team should have acquired a center fielder on the cheap. Someone like Corey Patterson.

Can't wait to get Jodie in my grasp.

And when I get that three-day pass,
I'm gonna kick old Jodie's ass.

You doubt Robothal? The man cares about all that is baseball. He sees all and reports all. He never has to sleep, he never has to use the restroom, he just moves ballpark to ballpark reporting all gossip and news.

Emil Brown is so old that the first time I ever heard his name was in a game called by Harry Caray.

Now that Emil Brown has hit 38 homers in the last three years maybe I can finally stop confusing him with Adrian Brown, whose career seems to be over.
   27. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: March 19, 2008 at 01:36 PM (#2715576)
Declino, are you sure you aren't thinking of Roosevelt Brown?
   28. Baseballing powerhouse Crispix Attacks Posted: March 19, 2008 at 01:49 PM (#2715599)
I remember Harry Caray talking about Brant Brown...
   29. Red Juice Posted: March 19, 2008 at 01:56 PM (#2715610)
if its only for a few weeks, and they are sure that Headley won't be getting the gig, why not just use McAnulty?
I don't get this, Headley has looked fine out there in the field. Maybe he is taking bad routes or something that we are just not seeing, but moving the guy around like they do and then sticking him back in AAA after he has done everything to win a job seems like nothing but cost control. Not about winning a division.
This team is going to need every single win it can garner, even in April. this is nuts
   30. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:03 PM (#2715619)

And Mordecai Brown. This is getting confusing. If only one of these Browns had some sort of distinguishing feature...

Center fielder Shane Victorino is one of the Phillies who appears too complacent to manager Charlie Manuel.

I do not understand this at all. What the hell is he talking about?
   32. Charter Member of the Jesus Melendez Fanclub Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:18 PM (#2715653)
I mean, if he's too complacent, how does that mesh with talking so much trash?
What does it mean to think one is Rollins and Howard? They are complacent? They talk trash? Victorino has a personality disorder?
What does he need to straighten out?
What do the other Phillies need to straighten out?

I have no idea what that paragraph means.
   33. Red Juice Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2715665)
31 & 32 it is just preseason motivational type stuff. thats the way i took it.
   34. The District Attorney Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:27 PM (#2715666)
I guess "complacent" means "thinks he's better than he really is and doesn't need to improve." At least, that's the best I can come up with.
   35. JJ1986 Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2715673)
Maybe he's complacent at trash talking and needs to get better at it. Rollins and Howard are examples of good trash talkers.

Nope, it was 1997 and Emil was a Pirate. And so was Adrian. I was so confused. And so was Harry.

Might've been this game, matter o' fact.
   37. JJ1986 Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:41 PM (#2715683)
I knew there was a Pirate back then named Emil Brown, but I never connected him with the Royals Emil Brown. I would have guessed they were different guys.
   38. Baseballing powerhouse Crispix Attacks Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:51 PM (#2715706)
I think you are vastly overestimating the number of people named "Emil" in today's world, JJ1986.
   39. Baseballing powerhouse Crispix Attacks Posted: March 19, 2008 at 02:54 PM (#2715711)
Now that I look at bb-ref, there are indeed a surprising number of Emils in MLB history, even discounting all the Emilios and people for whom it is their middle name. (John Emil Jaha? Edward Emil Kranepool? Who knew?)

Emil Brown has quietly amassed a good enough career to be probably the third-best Emil in baseball history, behind Emil "Irish" Meusel and Emil "Dutch" Leonard.

Maybe he should have an inaccurate ethnic nickname too. Emil "Pinoy" Brown sounds pretty good.
   40. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: March 19, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2715724)
"Nope, it was 1997 and Emil was a Pirate. And so was Adrian. I was so confused."

It didn't help that they're both African-American center fielders from the midwest, who were chosen in the Rule 5 draft.

I never had too much trouble telling them apart. Adrian is the one who was always hurt, and Emil is the one who always looked confused.
   41. Baseballing powerhouse Crispix Attacks Posted: March 19, 2008 at 03:03 PM (#2715730)
There was a guy named Emil Verban who had three all-star appearances in the 1940s, but his stats are...not very good.

Hey, his nickname was "Dutch" too.

Emil Brown definitely needs to become Pinoy Brown or Bohunkus Brown or Frenchy Brown or something.
   42. Brian Posted: March 19, 2008 at 03:20 PM (#2715755)
Anytime a team does what it appears SD is doing, holding Headley back to save $ down the line, I root for them to miss by the playoffs by a game and the rookie plays great after his recall. Let's call it the Braun effect.

Ogallala Brown? Hmong Brown? Azerbaijani Brown?

Or maybe he should just commute to Oakland from Vacaville and be known as Cowtown Emil Brown.
   44. WillieMays Haze Posted: March 19, 2008 at 04:21 PM (#2715837)
My dad's name is Emil (named after his father who was "Emilio"). But he pronounces it like "em-ull" not "em-eel" like Emil Brown seems to prefer.

Re: Headley, I'm as confused as most of you guys. I'm not sure how the whole arbitration clock thing works but since he has already came up and played in the majors, isn't that stuff irrelevant?

Why not leave Hairston in left and.......free Callix Crabbe!!

Seriously though, the Padres' whole outfield situation is scary. They might actually have Crabbe getting serious time out there by May if Edmonds and Giles break into pieces. They'll be reminiscing of the glory days of Termell Sledge.

Good read on Crabbe today from MLB.com

I would love to see him make the team, he seems like a fun player. Not just the name, but the guy is shorter than me (he's listed at 5 foot 7) and can play just about any position on the field. Plus he takes a bunch of walks. He should make the team on entertainment value alone.

If they cut him for somebody like Tony Clark or Gerut, maybe the A's will pick him up. (*edit*: note his top 2 PECOTA comps are Marco Scutaro and Esteban German!)
   47. Red Juice Posted: March 19, 2008 at 04:47 PM (#2715868)
If they cut him they have to give him back to Milwaukee I believe. he is a rule V guy.
I do hope he makes the team too.
He seems to love what he does, a true super UT.

He has to pass through waivers, so a team willing to keep him on the roster can pick him up.

Or a team could of course buy his rights or trade for him if they are sure they want him.

All those Browns seemed government-issued to me: Adrian, Brant, Dee, Emil... It was nice of whatever agency produced them all to give them distinctive names in alphabetical order so we could keep track of them.

I assume that Cosmo Brown met with some sort of mishap and had to be destroyed.

That's not exactly fair to the Brewers. They were playing quite well without Braun and his awful defense at 3B. I understand your point, but this case doesn't justify it.

But Jody was there when you left,

Your baby was there when you left,

Ain't it great to have a pal,

Re: Headley, I'm as confused as most of you guys. I'm not sure how the whole arbitration clock thing works but since he has already came up and played in the majors, isn't that stuff irrelevant?

No. It's accumulated ML service time. According to Cot's he was up for just 13 days last year. Depending on what their goal might be for keeping him down, that just adds 2 weeks. If you see what I mean. Probably not.

I've confused the hell out of everyone. He has 13 days in the majors. If the Padres leave him down for 13 days then bring him up, he'll have 1 full year of service -- that would be dumb from a service time perspective as there's no meaningful difference between 1 year 13 days and 1 year. But there is a big difference between 3 years service time vs. 3 years minus 13 days. Well, sorta as it's not strictly "years" as obviously everybody would leave their rookies down for 1 day or a week or whatever -- the Union's not that dumb.

Their goal could be for him to have 5 months at the end of the year to ensure that he is only a "super 2" at the end of 2010 -- arb eligible but still 4 seasons removed from FA and he would get paid a little less than he would if he had 3 full years service time. To do that, given the 2 weeks he was up last year, they'd have to keep him down for 1.5 months. To avoid super 2, he would need to have (probably, there's no firm cutoff) less than 2 years 4 months -- in which case they'd need to hold him down for 2.5 months this season.
