Rosenthal: Rays reach agreement with No. 1 pick

Spent it like Beckham.

That didn’t take long.

Less than two weeks after making Tim Beckham the No. 1 pick in the baseball draft, the Rays have reached agreement with the high-school shortstop on a $6.15 million signing bonus, according to a major-league source.

Roughly a 10% increase over the signing bonus of last year's #1, though the fact that Price got his bonus as part of an $8.5 million Major League contract complicates any attempt to use this as a baseline.

That's well over slot. I never understood why if the teams were going to ignore slotting $$$ why they would agree to throw away a 1/2 season of development by waiting until Aug 15 to announce the signings. Apparently, the Rays have figured out that there is no good reason to wait.

Nice move by the Rays. Even if Beckham doesn't pan out, it's a much better use of money than, say, signing Eric Gagne or trading for Matt Morris.

Jim Callis was saying yesterday in his ESPN.com chat that MLB was forcing this. Sort of along the line of "Fine, you'll break slot, but at least wait until the last day"

The Rays are finally realizing that a rule with no punishment isn't a rule at all.

What's this kid's ETA?

High school kid? 2011 probably the earliest unless he destroys next season.
