Rosenthal: Sources: Furcal meets with A’s officials in Oakland

Beane: Blitzen! Trapper! Furrcal!

The A’s continued their aggressive courtship of Rafael Furcal on Tuesday, meeting in Oakland with the free-agent shortstop, his wife, Glenny, and his agent, Paul Kinzer, according to major-league sources.

Furcal visited A’s officials at the Oakland Coliseum, toured communities where he might live and had a two-hour lunch with A’s general manager Billy Beane.

The A’s have yet to make Furcal a formal offer, sources say, but the two sides expect to speak again Wednesday and possibly discuss financial terms.

Furcal, 31, is seeking a four-year contract.

Nick Johnson is owed $5.5 million next year and is not expected to be ready for opening day. I don't think the A's should sign Giambi, but he has to make more sense than Johnson.

I doubt that Beane will go after Giambi...too much bad blood there.

Is there any reason not to persue Dallas McPherson? Yes, I know his stats were in Albuquerque last year, which inflates home run totals, but 42 home runs anywhere is nothing to sneeze at. Plus he could back up Chavez at 3B.

Isn't McPherson still under the Marlins' control?

How much could Samson and company extract for McPherson? Maybe Beane could by Samson a condo in Boca.

I'd rather have Hinske or Branyan than McPherson. McPherson's MLE's of .201/.313/.410 don't excite me. I guess the advantage of Johnson is that the Nats might pick up some of the salary and his trade value has to be something on the Matt Murton level.

Why not Johnson for Crosby? Injury for injury! Who's going to walk out of the emergency room first?

I doubt the Nats want Crosby when they have Guzman and Zimmerman.

We'll have Crosby hobble out to second base for the 63 games he's healthy.

The problem with Crosby is that he might be healthy.

Good point! I think I'd rather see Ronnie Belliard waddle out to second base anyway. Some people feel good when there are still players playing who are older than them. I settle for being content that there are players whose breasts are bigger than mine.

I always figured that Beane would be interested in NJ -- especially given the Nats' interest in Teixeira. I know Bowden lusted after Carlos Gonzalez, but he's about a fortnight too late for that!

Is Johnson still good with the glove, or have the injuries killed his fielding?

Yes, please, on Crosby for NJ either way.

Who knows? Johnson has barely played the last 2 years.

Crosby's less than worthless - a replacement level player with a moderate contract. Johnson's a big injury risk, but at least he's good if he plays. I hope Bowden is not dumb enough to make such a deal - if he has to trade Johnson, at least get a real prospect for him. And I hope the rest of baseball isn't dumb enough not to offer a better value than Crosby if Johnson's going to be traded.

I can't imagine the Nats will get a real prospect for him without absorbing his salary. And, yeah, getting Crosby back would mean they get no salary relief and no talent in return.

But I'd send someone like Corey Brown or Matt Sulentic for Johnson and a bit of cash.

Nick Johnson in the hands of the A's medical staff? Why not take the money and set fire to it?

@14: That right there is the kind of Friday Night Pyrospectacular I could get into.

Yep.
