Rosenthal: Sources: Rockies awarded claim on Livan Hernandez

Peristalsystem down!...Rockies making their move!

Right-hander Livan Hernandez is on the verge of joining the Rockies.

Hernandez, designated for assignment by the Twins, was claimed off waivers by the Rockies on Tuesday, according to major-league sources.

At least one other National League club also claimed Hernandez, sources said. The Rockies were awarded the pitcher because they had the worst record of any of the claiming teams.

The teams now have 48 hours to work out a trade. If no agreement is reached, the Twins likely will let Hernandez go to the Rockies without receiving a player in return. It is unclear whether the Twins can pull back Hernandez after removing him from their 40-man roster.

The Twins do not want to pull back Hernandez. Their priority is to escape the remaining obligation on Hernandez’s contract — the balance of his $5 million salary, plus as much as $2 million in incentives.

Alive? More like it just shot up a cocktail of coke and methamphetamine. He's going to the largest, most batting average friendly park in the world. This is awesome.

Not for the Rockies, of course.

If you were a guy putting up decent numbers at triple A, the kind of guy who seems sort of stuck being labeled as a AAAA pitcher, don't you despair at roster detritus like Livan getting more chances?

The Rockies don't seem to have any guys putting up decent numbers at triple A. Steven Register's stats are pretty good out of the bullpen, but he was called up recently anyway.

Livan is likely to be better than Josh Towers, Mark Redman, Valerio de los Santos, Victor Zambrano, or whoever of that list are still in the Rockies organization. Jose Capellan was traded to the Royals. Franklin Morales is still a hot prospect but has been terrible all year. Greg Reynolds already showed that he isn't ready for the majors. John Koronka, Jason Hirsh and Sean Smith might have reasons to complain, but they haven't been very good in AAA either.

They also have no starting pitchers doing well in double-A.

In summary, Colorado is the perfect place for Livan Hernandez and I hope he starts every fourth game for the rest of 2008.

I wonder if the teams actually go through the motions on this. Does the Twins' GM call up the Rockies' GM and say "Hey, I see you claimed Livan, what were you thinking about giving us for him?" when both GM's know that it's going to end up with the Twins letting him go for nothing?

Man, let this serve as a reminder to Indians and Tigers fans: Yes, 2008 could be worse.

The Rox have gone from the World Series to claiming Livan on waivers in less than a year. Ouch.
