Rosenthal: Twins still looking to ship Nathan, Santana

They must be packing on the Polyurea-laced Dri-Slide® to keep Robothal going through the night.

The Twins, according to one industry source, are close to acquiring a center fielder, but not necessarily the Red Sox’s Coco Crisp, who also is being targeted by another unidentified club. Crisp, 28, is affordable at $4.75 million next season and $5.75 million in 2009, but the Twins might prefer someone younger.

Meanwhile, the Yankees could trade Melky Cabrera even if they do not include him in a deal for Santana. Several clubs are showing interest in Cabrera, including — presumably — the Braves, who tried to acquire him last off-season. If the Yankees trade Cabrera, they will move Johnny Damon back to center.

Right-hander Matt Garza remains the young pitcher the Twins are most likely to move, and the team also could deal right-hander Boof Bonser. A Garza-for-Adam Jones exchange with the Mariners could make sense, but the M’s would be more likely to dangle Jones along with right-hander Brandon Morrow in a package for Santana.

Every now and again, it strikes me how completely out of my depth I am when it comes to the money figures of baseball. $4.75 million is "affordable"? Setting aside the fact that he's an average ballplayer at best, my own personal defintion of "affordable" is more in the range of a Honda Accord, and even that's stretching it a little. $4.75 million, when I read it in an item about baseball, just rolls off my back like water from a duck. But that is so much money. So much.

Joe Nathan would be a good trade target for many teams, barring an Eric Gagne-esque collapse

Maybe the Brewers can trick the Twins into thinking T Gwynn is their "type" of player. I bet that could help land Nathan.

Funny... when I saw Matt Garza, I thought "One more guy that David Littlefield gave away for free." Then I realized that I was thinking of Matt Guerrier. Then I got mad all over again when I looked up Guerrier's numbers.

Not only did Littlefield horde middle relievers, he couldn't even manage to keep the good ones.

Seriously, if I were the Twins, I wouldn't trade Johan Santana. I'd try my hardest to re-sign him, and i'd let him play 2008 (possibly making a playoff run), and I'd let him walk before trading him for the garbage packages being thrown around.

Sometimes you gotta call a bluff, sometimes fold, sometimes you should just leave the table. When you hold Johan Santana, you have a lot of options.

With $4.75MM I'd retire and live off a very conservative 6% ROI. Of course, I'm pretty lazy, which inhibits my chances of getting $4.75MM.

The Twins should stop acting like the Marlins and start talking with the Marlins. They should trade Bonser and Garza for Cabrera, sign Cameron, and win the freakin' world series. Then let Santana walk.

Despite no talk of Suzukis.

I've been thinking for two years that the Twins would be wise to trade Nathan, except I have never really thought of a team that make sense to give up a lot for a top-flight closer. It just seems like we're in a phase where most contending teams either have solid closers or think they do.

#7 I've been thinking the Twins should get Cabrera too, but was thinking that they would need to trade Santana to get the right pieces. Maybe they trade Nathan for those pieces and throw Neshek into the closer role...

Mauer Cabrera Morneau looks pretty good 3 4 5 in the lineup.

Might be a better 2-3-4. I have no idea who the 1 would be, tho - maybe Tyner on a players-coffee high?
