rotoworld.com:  Bastardo wins major league debut vs. Padres

Antonio Bastardo won his major league debut against the Padres on Tuesday with six innings of one-run ball.
The Phillies won the game handily 10-5. Bastardo’s job was made easier with a 4-0 lead before even throwing a pitch, but he showed great poise, holding the Padres to just four hits against one walk and five strikeouts. The only run scored on an Adrian Gonzalez solo home run in the sixth inning.

Bastardo would have been a good player to have around in pre-reg days.

He confronted all those Padres, and only Adrian Gonzalez turned out to be his daddy.

Is there a Dan LeBetard article on Bastardo?

The Phillies announcers were surprised at how hard he was throwing. He's touted to hit 90-91 but hit 94 last night.

AB has not been as highly touted as a number of Phillies pitchers. He's kicked butt in AA and AAA so far this year. I'm supposing that the odds of this being a hot streak vs. he's suddenly turned into a stud are pretty long. The one thing that the last two years have taught me is to enjoy the ride so that's what I'll do.

Bastardo's minor league K rate was 10.1 per nine and he was BA's #11 Phillies prospect. So the idea that Bastardo is a legit MLB level pitcher isn't flukish to me in the slightest. As luck would have it, Bastardo is in line to start the Sunday night game on ESPN.

I really like this guy - BA's long underrated him imo.

Very promising debut. I don't think we should count on him pitching in the mid-90s regularly -- he was only hitting 94 in the first couple of innings, and perhaps not coincidentally, his control seemed to get better after he calmed down. But it's good that he has that extra gear if he ever needs a strikeout.

Interestingly, he was touted as throwing a changeup (the Philly broadcast crew called it his best pitch), but according to Gameday he didn't throw one all game.

I'm hopeful he pitches well enough to convince the Phillies they don't need to make a trade for a starter. I don't want another Blanton-level pitcher, and the top-tier guys all cost too much (either in terms of salary, or in terms of prospects for the ones with affordable contracts).

add me to the list of pleasently surprised Phils Phans. Having Chan Ho Park make the same lineup look great in the same game was a good comparitor of which one of these guys might belong in a starting rotation.

From the Department of Useless Information, a.k.a., the Elias Sports Bureau: last night was the first time in baseball history that two pitchers making their major league debuts (Bastardo and Oakland's Vin Mazzaro) defeated two former Cy Young Award winners (Peavy and Colon).

I thought a nine-run lead was safe against Park, especially in Petco.
I didn't expect him to walk everyone, but I probably should have.

#11 prospect isn't really a legit MLB level pitcher typically. Especially if the guy is 23 already. What I can't figure out is that something clicked in place late last year and this year or this is just your average fluke.
