Royals hire Seitzer, Gibbons as coaches

I hope Tiffany gets that World Series Trophy back on time! oh…

The Royals filled out their on-field staff Monday morning by hiring former Toronto manager John Gibbons as their bench coach and returning Kevin Seitzer to the organization as hitting coach.

The two hirings complete manager Trey Hillman’s 2009 staff. Pitching coach Bob McClure, first-base coach Rusty Kuntz, bullpen coach John Mizerock and Owen are returning to the staff.

“I’m very pleased with the amount of energy and overall baseball experience we’ve been able to add to our Major League staff with John Gibbons and Kevin Seitzer,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “John’s recent American League experience as the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays will be a tremendous asset to Trey and the rest of the coaching staff.

“I’m also excited to bring Kevin into our organization. He was an exciting player and fan favorite during his days as a Royal, and possesses the same amount of passion and energy as a coach.”

Good for Gibby to find another job in the majors, the world needs a little more Boomhauer.

Gibbons and Kuntz? How many of each?

I'm happy to see Gibbons get another chance. Hopefully this will lead to another managerial job at some point. I actually thought he was a pretty good manager, and the best Jays manager in the post-Cito era (which is also technically now the pre-Cito era).

returning Kevin Seitzer to the organization as hitting coach.

Oh yeah, that'll work. Expect plenty of sphincter tightening.

I recalled that Raul Ibanez credited Seitzer with his breakthrough that took him from perpetual AAA player to MLB regular. I thought it was when Kevin was their hitting coach, but it might have been when he was running his academy in KC: Link.

Fun fact: THT's RZR has Ibanez as the second best LF in the AL.

Edit: The link address was too long. I'll save you the trouble and just give you the punchline. There are only four qualified AL LFs and Delmon Young and Carlos Quentin were worse. Carl Crawford is better.

Seitzer's "just tap it to the opposite field no matter what your strengths/weaknesses are as a hitter" approach doesn't seem like it'll address Kansas City's offensive issues. Or those of any other team.

I think I know the names of more coaches than players for the Royals. I'm getting older.
