Russ Adams designated for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays called up outfielder/designated hitter David Delluci from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday morning in New York. He is the left-handed bat manager Cito Gaston hopes might add balance to his lineup.

The move had been anticipated since Wednesday when Russ Adams was seen getting handshakes from teammates after Toronto closed out its nine-game home stand at the Rogers Centre. Adams, who hit .238 in eight games with the Blue Jays, was designated for assignment and must be traded, released or re-assigned within 10 days.

Thanks to Geo.

WOOOOHOOOO!!! J.P. finally succumbed to reality and has admitted that Adams was a bust.

Seriously, who would have ever thought that of all the SS talent the Jays have been through under JP's tenure, Scutaro would end up being the best of the bunch?

Scutaro's has a career .715 OPS, including this year's outlier. Is that still better than anyone JP brought in? How's his defense? There's an argument to be made that McDonald might have been better thanks to his fielding.

Even though he plays 2B now, I'm pretty sure Aaron Hill is the best of the bunch. He played SS in college, the minors, and parts of his first two seasons with the Jays.

One could argue that he doesn't qualify anymore, but he was certainly drafted and developed as if he would play SS, so I'd count him.

One player means nothing in evaluating a team's drafting success. Taking college middle infielders with mid first round picks produced Adams and Hill. Blue Jays should be happy with the net return.

In the last 2 years Scutaro has developed from a backup infielder who's good at 2B/3B and can fake SS, into a very good defensive shortstop. A +13 UZR for 2008-mid 2009. It's not so much great range as he's completely eliminated mistakes, only 2 errors through the first 80 games.

To be successful in the big leagues, for 99% of players, it takes a combination of talent and hard work. Scutaro just appears to be one of those guys who works harder than most everybody else. He's probably gotten more out of his ability than anyone expected he was capable of.

Still can't believe they let Josh Banks go so they could protect him. Stupid.
