SABR: Free Giveaway - Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009

Edited by acclaimed baseball historians Gary Gillette and Pete Palmer, The Emerald Guide distills the 2008 season down to 586 fact-filled pages that contain the pitching, fielding, and hitting statistics for each player active in the major and minor leagues in 2008. As with the classic Sporting News Guides, the Emerald Guide also features team-by-team daily results, a directory of important contacts, a synopsis of the just-completed season, and much more. A bound version is available via print on demand at Lulu.com for $23.95. Every page in the bound edition is in the PDF.

Members can access the file via the member site. Non-members will get a download link via E-mail.

I saw some SABRen passing one around in Cleveland, but didn't get a chance to look at it myself. What will this get me that isn't available on the web?

PS - There was a Bill Nowlin interview at BPro that SABR reprinted on their site. Nowlin is one of the guys that got me into BioProject.

It's a little unclear to me on the site, are the '07/'08 versions downloadable also on the member site?

Also if you didn't see it Bill's record label produced a Grammy-winning record this past year. http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/02/11/grammys_ease_way_for_mass_label/

Yeah, Jose. Through Bill, I have only two degrees of separation from Robert Plant.

No, but you can buy PDFs here.

Just downloaded my copy. Great fun!

This in the email I received this afternoon
"SABR plans to publish The Emerald Guide annually. Gillette and Palmer also authored 2007 and 2008 editions of The Emerald Guide (co-published with Sports-Reference). Free PDF versions of these editions are also available from the SABR website."

I got the '07-'08 guides off the SABR website for free; there were links after I entered an e-mail address. Can't wait to look at them later.

According to the Emerald Guide's list of team career records for the Mets (p. 25), their career leader in games played is Bud Harrelson at... 1322. That works out to about nine full seasons for a 47-year-old franchise. In contrast, the Astros -- who also began play in '62 -- have had eight players with more than 1322 games played for them.

WTF. I don't know if he's tops, but Ed Kranepool's 1,853 games played as a Met certainly beats that.

Edit: It appears they just thoroughly overlooked Kranepool's career as a Met. Unless they've missed others, he should also rank atop the at bats, hits and total bases list and on numerous other career charts.

Whoa.

Oops.

I'll probably bump this again tomorrow (if need be). It's a worthy successor to the TSN Guide and you can't beat the price.
Also - finally! a good source for Mexican League info!

Has anyone telegrammed Murray Chass about this yet?

Holy crap, Kit Pellow won the Triple Crown in Mexico last year.

And that's the Julio Franco playing for Quintana Roo, isn't it?

Hi,

The SABR office became aware of this error late last night. We love Ed Kranepool and meant him no direspect--there was an input error when some of the queries for the data were run. A corrected version of The Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009 has already been uploaded to Lulu.com/sabr. The corrected PDF will be uploaded to the SABR website by 10:00 a.m. Eastern time.

Our apologies for any confusion or dismay this may have caused.

Hey - we all love Ed Kranepool. It's cool...

Incidentally, welcome to the board Susan - hopefully you'd like to stick around...

Baseball Primer grinds slowly, yet it grinds exceeding small.

Good work, SABRSusan.
   20. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: March 12, 2009 at 12:52 PM (#3100924)
GGC - not much, but it's organized well and doesn't require you to be online.
   21. SABRSusan Posted: March 12, 2009 at 01:14 PM (#3100941)
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. I will definitely stick around.

5/1/2008 Julio Franco anunció su retiro del Tigres de Quintana Roo

Julio Franco has ridden off into the sunset. There are no more active players older than I am.

Got the explanation in an e-mail from SABR. Apparently the leaderboards pretty much left off anyone whose last name begins with K.
   25. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: March 14, 2009 at 12:59 PM (#3102903)
While I (as no longer a SABR member) was previously unable to locate the '07/'08 editions - they're now available after you submit your name/e-mail.
   26. SABRSusan Posted: March 17, 2009 at 02:14 PM (#3105556)
Bumping this up. We've had nearly 2000 downloads (of the corrected version) in less than a week. The Emerald Guide is still available for download and still free.
