Schilling says there’s ‘very realistic chance’ he’s done in Boston

and tosses a zesty stielhandgranate the Yankees way…

Schilling said it did not bother him that Rodriguez’s announcement came during Boston’s coronation. But he seemed to relish the opportunity to take a shot at the Red Sox rivals’ disappointing season.

“It wasn’t unexpected,” Schilling said. “Between them and the Yankees making sure we were updated every 15 minutes about when they were actually going to name their manager, I didn’t give a crap. Bottom line was they’re playing golf and making organizational decisions and we’re still playing games.”

Thanks to Was Watching.

You haven't read kevin's comments on George W. have you?

Tampa Bay should make a strong move for Schilling. He's already said that he'd be willing to go to Tampa and he only wants a one- or two-year deal. Kasmir's talked about wanting a veteran pitcher to give the young staff someone to look up to. Say what you will about Schill, the guy is talent realized, and there's nothing more important for the Rays than to see their pitching prospects realize their talent.

if so, happy trails schill. 2 championships is more than we could have hoped for during your stay. 2-0 in the WS for Bos, wins in each ALCS game 6.
muchas gracias.

Schilling is going to want to spend his last couple of years playing for a team that has at least a shot of reaching the post season. I don't see him as the type to either go where the most money is, or go to a team playing out the string every year, in order to be a pitching coach.

Young pitching staff with pennant aspirations - what about Detroit?

Actually, that was exactly the first team that came to mind.

I dislike Schilling but his quote is quite funny. To the victor belongs the spoils.

Schilling should've negotiated a player option for 2008 if the Sox win 2 world series during his current contract. That's what he gets for not hiring me as his agent.

He should consider a return to the NL. Although pitching in Comerica might not be a bad idea, either.

Actually, Schilling has already said that he would love to go to a place, like Tampa, that had a lot of young talent, with the idea of not only helping on the field but playing a mentoring role. And, as noted above, he mentioned Tampa Bay specifically.

I'm sure they'd have to open the wallet more than they generally have. But it would be a good PR move all around.

Just because Schilling said it, does not mean that it is what he would do. Schilling talks so much, I doubt he can keep track of everything he says.

Given his ego, I have to think Schilling would like a shot of getting to the Hall of Fame. He sure as heck won't be padding his win totals in Tampa.

Schilling's hinted he wouldn't mind a return to Philly. A Schilling/Hamels/Kendricks/Garcia/Moyer rotation would be one of the stronger ones in the NL.

Why not? They have a good young offense. They'd stand a good chance to win on days when Schilling, Kazmir, and maybe Shields start. (There's that bullpen problem though.) How they fare on days when Schilling doesn't start wouldn't affect his win totals.

Looking it up, I was a little surprised. They had a team OPS+ of 103 this year. Their only two starting pitchers with ERA+ over 78 (seriously, that's an unbelievably bad pitching staff) were Kazmir (ERA+ of 130) and Shields (ERA+ of 117) and they both had winning records (13-9 and 12-8, respectively). Schilling might actually be able to get 15 wins a year in Tampa if he stays healthy.

Schilling's a difficult one... I'm a true believer in the Branch Rickey(Walter Alston?) school of getting rid of a guy one year too early then one year too late.
There are a few issues here. Will he stay healthy enough for 26-28 starts? If he does, will teams the 2nd and 3rd time around start to hit him hard in the latter part of the season once they figure him out? He doesn't really have that out pitch any longer and its hard too fool the same guys more then once.
Aside from his politics, I like Schilling. He's an individual, shows up to play 100% when its his turn in the rotation and has some baseball acumen which can make him more effective then he should be.
Do I want him back at $13mil for one year? Sure, why the hell not, I'd love to start the season with 6 starters. Besides I'd love to see Dice-K on a floating 5 day/6 day schedule anyway.

Every team could use Schilling next year. It's all a question of who is willing to pay up. (likely something in the neighborhood of 2years/$32mil)

Schilling has a new blog post.

The list of teams that our family has talked over, that we think would be a fit for next year, should we not come back, are pretty much teams in cities we agree would be ok for our last year, and teams I think have a legitimate shot at being in the post season and/or World Series. Teams we didn’t include aren’t for any one reason. There are a million little things that go into this from stadiums to school districts to travel to spring training to etc. etc. etc. but the list represents the teams after Boston that have some of the off the field things that are big to us, plus the potential to go into October next year.

Cleveland, Detroit, Anaheim, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A., S.D., Arizona, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee

No Tampa Bay, despite what he said earlier in the year.

No Yankees, either. with the Mets would be entertaining. I'm surprised about Milwaukee - I guess successful field management isn't a priority. Put him on Detroit, Cleveland, or Anaheim and any of those teams' W.S. odds go way up. Seeing him pitch against Boston in next year's ALCS would be pretty compelling.

Maybe he likes the Brewers pitching coach.

He'd said in his post-WS blog that he wanted to pitch one more year. IF that's the case, he might accept 1/13 from Boston (same salary as last year).

Anaheim...maybe they go the Arod/Schilling double...holy crap that'd be something.

.

I actually think the Indians could use Schilling more than just about any other team. Phillies second. But, really on a one-year deal, he is useful to any contender. But I think the Indians and Phillies are the best on-field fits.

Schilling in Milwaukee---lots of young pitchers, great offense....yeah, I'm liking this idea. Glad he's open to it.
