Scott Boras on Andruw Jones: He’s “just looking for a situation”

Andruw Jones still intends to be an everyday player, his agent said today.

“We’re just looking for a situation,” Scott Boras said.

The Dodgers agreed last week to trade or release Jones by Jan. 15 in exchange for restructuring his contract, for which he is still owed $22.1 million. Jones’ salary will be cut to about $5 million next season and the remainder of the money will be deferred.

In the likely case that Jones is released, another team could sign him and be on the hook for only the major-league minimum of $400,000.

Boras stressed that Jones never demanded to be traded or released from the Dodgers. The idea for him to leave, Boras said, came out of a meeting he had in November with General Manager Ned Colletti and Manager Joe Torre.

Boras said he then relayed the thoughts to Jones.

“Both parties made a decision that it was best for Andruw to get a fresh start somewhere else,” Boras said. “We amicably worked out a deal to get this done.”

Boras also said he wanted to show the Dodgers his willingness to resolve problems involving his clients.

“They took a big pill here,” Boras said of the Dodgers. “It was a positive for both sides, really. ...Andruw felt it was best for him.”

Maybe it's just me, but hasn't Andruw Jones already eaten his way into a "situation"?

Ladies and gentlemen of Pittsburgh, your next right fielder, Andruw Jones.

By "situation", Boras obviously means "all-night buffet".

So the Dodgers paid 36 million dollars for 240 really bad plate appearances. Is that the worst contract signing in history?

Yeah, I bet it was smiles all around for the Dodgers. Andruw should build a couple of little league fields in Glendale to make things right.

Definitely among the worst. The Dodgers paid him around $600k for every time he reached base safely.

“We’re just looking for a situation,” Scott Boras said.

"Although, depending on how the market shakes out in the coming months, we will settle for a circumstance."

According to Fangraphs Jones was overpaid by 37.6 million. I think they overrate him though.

Andruw Jones is looking for a situation where the pitching isn't as good as the DWL. Legion ball, Japanese semi-pro industrial league, something like that.

Could be worse, they could've paid him $36 million for 480 really bad plate appearances.

And yet the thing about this deal is...very few people pegged it as a disastrously bad one when Colletti made it. A lot of people figured he had to bounce back.

IIRC, most of the comments were along the lines that Colletti was smart to just commit to two years, rather than the 4-5 that Jones had been seeking--even if the annual salary was on the high side. Opinions here were split 50/50 on whether Jones would bounce back from his mediocre 2007.

that's my recollection

also I don't know what the defensive numbers purport to say, but Braves fans I know insisted that Jones' fielding in 2007 was better than it had been the 2-3 years previous...

a good defensive CF who posts an 88 OPS+ is not a terrible thing to have - it's not a good thing, its not worth 18m a year- but it's better than playing slappy Pierre...

but 2008 was just a complete catastrophe.
Worst OPS+, OF, 200+ PAs:
Cnt Player OPS+ PA Year Age Tm
+----+-----------------+----+---+----+---+---+
1 Bob Dernier 27 205 1989 32 PHI
2 Clyde Barnhart 29 234 1926 30 PIT
3 George Wright 33 393 1985 26 TEX
4 Ted Ford 33 206 1971 24 CLE
5 Andruw Jones 34 238 2008 31 LAD
6 Wily Mo Pena 34 206 2008 26 WSN
7 John Shelby 35 371 1989 31 LAD
8 Paul Lehner 35 203 1951 30 TOT
9 Moose Solters 36 214 1938 32 CLE
10 Eric Owens 37 232 1996 25 CIN
11 Jermaine Dye 38 253 2003 29 OAK

I suppose if Dye could come back so could Jones...
But then again Dye was seriously injured and worked his ass off to come back, whereas Jones seemingly complains about his allergies, puts on some more weight and quits on his Winter League team...

His fielding really was pretty good in 2007. Then he gained like 40 pounds during the offseason.
