Seattle Times: Baker: Zduriencik wants “guys who are winners”

In today’s presser, JZ put in good words for clutch hitting, clubhouse leadership, and counting the rings. No gorilla suit was in evidence.

On the subject of a new manager, he spelled out what he’s looking for in his ideal candidates:

“What you’re looking for is, you’re looking for guys who want to achieve,’’ he said. “You’re looking for guys who are winners and you’re looking for guys who have a track record of success.’’

That would seem to preclude any current bench coaches who’ve yet to manage elsewhere. But then again, it depends on how one defines “success”. A bench coach like Brad Mills in Boston has certainly achieved success and has the rings to prove it. But it didn’t sound like that was the candidate Zduriencik was describing.

[...] On the issue of leadership, in and outside the clubhouse, he said: “I think the manager sets the tone. If you look at an army...you have a general. But that general has his lieutenants as well.’’

Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln attempted to fend off critics who suggest he and team president Chuck Armstrong will be heavily involved in influencing Zduriencik’s decisions.

“This is a tough, seasoned executive,’’ Lincoln said. “He’s been around this team a long time. He is going to make the decisions. Jack Zduriencik is the man who is going to be making the baseball decisions for the Seattle Mariners.’’

In other words, a 180 degree turn from the previous regime.

Zduriencik will win, because he has the Will of the Warrior.

Kim Ng, not so much.

If I were Ng, I'd be happy not to be hired by the guys who are endorsing this stupidity.

Futurama references are always welcome.

From the interviews with the other GM candidates:

DiPoto; "You know, I have always been weak for the lukewarm guys, the mediocrites."

Ng: "I definitely don't like winners. In the Dodgers we're more into backstabbing our young players in the press. That's good fun, making little Kempie cry."

LaCave: "Yes, many people like winners, but I tell you what, that's just ########, what this club realy needs are people who's into cross stitching."

They should wait to see who wins the WS and then acquire that team's entire roster.

To be fair, it seems that he was saying he wanted a manager who had been a winner, meaning he was looking for that as a specific qualification for a job, not as a nebulous trait a player might have.

Baker wrote what he wanted to write, regardless of what Zduriencik actually said. Having watched the press conference, I can tell you that the tone of the whole thing was entirely different than what was written here. He repeatedly talked about how chemistry is a nice bonus, but "talent wins" and "winning cures a lot of problems". He didn't put in a plug for clutch hitting - he only mentioned it once, in a long string of things that he'd like to see A-ball guys develop. And the only quote he made about wanting a winner was in direct response to a question about whether the manager he hires should have experience in the AL, to which he said that wasn't a requirement.
