SF Chronicle: Earthquake rattles SF Bay area during Giants’ game

It certainly wasn’t caused by the Giants’ offense.

A light earthquake has rattled the San Francisco Bay area and was felt during the Giants’ game with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Many felt the temblor — with a preliminary report as a 4.0-magnitude from the U.S. Geological Survey — at the Giants’ waterfront ballpark. There was no interruption of the game.
...
The quake hit just after 9 p.m. and could be felt throughout the region. The temblor’s epicenter was near Alamo, about 28 miles east of San Francisco.

It's the big one, Elizabeth.

Wow. I was having dinner downtown maybe a mile from the park tonight, and I didn't feel a thing.

It felt like someone behind me was kicking my seat, but there was no one behind me. My brother, sitting in front of me, felt the same thing.

But we're dumb and didn't figure it out.

You are most likely to feel a mild earthquake when you are in a familiar place. Being out and about, there are too many explanations for an unfamliar rumble.

But to feel a big one, you only need to be nearby!

You're also more likely to feel it in the grandstand of a ballgame, and in a neighborhood like China Basin, which is built on landfill.

Were you kicking his seat?

At home, didn't feel squat. Neither did Mrs. MH#1F. Granted, we're down in San Mateo, but that's not all that far.

Almost exactly what it felt like when I was at the Kingdome during a quake. I was talking to my brother when our heads started bobbing off tempo. My first thought was seat kicking, then someone running up the stairs nearby, then a crowd standing and stomping in the flimsy stands of a high school gym (but wait, this is a giant concrete arena half-filled with apathetic Seattlites--nobody's stomping and even if they were--holy ####, it's an earthquake!)

The shaking of solid ground is disorienting.
