SF Gate: Jenkins: In season of little promise, Giants will have moments

Like checking out chicks at the pool and then puking...uhh, from what the scout said.

Eugenio Velez: A bit more patience. Pitchers are pounding him down low, an obvious weakness in Velez’s hitting approach, and he saw the master in Arizona’s Brandon Webb. As every opposing scout took note, Velez whiffed badly on one of Webb’s notorious sinkers in the first inning.

(Then again, Velez joined a cast of thousands. Arizona left fielder Eric Byrnes says he’s always “shocked” when a fly ball actually comes his way. As Webb gets one groundball out after another, Byrnes said, “You feel like you should just pull up a lawn chair, order up a drink from the bar and check out all the chicks at the pool.")

...Matt Cain: A nice, 11-0 victory in which he goes the distance. How many pitches? Oh, maybe 138. That’s right, you heard it. “I mean, my God, look at him,” said an old-school type among the scouting fraternity. “He’s a horse. He’s ready to throw 140 right now - and the game after that. This pitch-count stuff makes me puke.”

I've never heard of half of these guys and the once I have heard of are way past their prime!

most of these guys never had a prime.

THIS GUY HERE IS DEAD!

I think these ole movie quotes describe the 08 Giants (and probably the Giants for the next 5+ years) quite well.

THIS GUY HERE IS DEAD!

I've long argued for starting the reanimated corpse of Carl Hubbell over Barry Zito.

Cross him off then.

No reason to doubt this, but it feels like lots of times when people say something like this, the turnaround happens much quicker than expected.

5 years ago, the Detroit Tigers were the laughingstock of baseball, considered possibly the worst team of the modern era, with no end in sight. 3 years later they made it to the World Series, and now they are a model franchise.

On Brian Bocock:

I haven't had a chance to watch a whole lot og Giants baseball this year, but the one game I did see involved Bocock striking out against a Dodger reliever on three or four pitches... The most fearsome of which was a 90 MPH heater right down the middle. I was on the phone with my dad, at the time, and said, 'It appears that the book on Bocock is to throw him fastballs across the heart of the plate.' He could only sigh.

It'll be fun when they finally turn things around... You know, when I'm 32. Hopefully I can buy season tickets by then.

Compare and contrast Dave Dombroski and Brian Sabean. Which is not to say the Giants have to be wretched for 5+ years. But they need to take the first step towards avoiding that fate, and they haven't yet.
