SF Gate: Johnson wins #300

My prediction for the next 300 game winner: Andy Pettite

Randy Johnson cut his teeth as a Montreal Expo, became a star as a Seattle Mariner and won a championship as an Arizona Diamondback. All of that, though, had been relegated to the musty pages of a history book when the Big Unit wrote one of his most defining chapters Thursday.

Johnson became the 24th pitcher and sixth left-hander in major-league history to win his 300th game, in a 5-1 victory against the Washington Nationals, and did so as a San Francisco Giant.

Johnson pitched six dominating innings and watched the bullpen get the last nine outs in the opener of a doubleheader that was scheduled after Johnson’s start Wednesday night was rained out. The game was far tenser than the final score

Apparently he'll be the last major leaguer ever to achieve this feat.

I'll leave the same tribute that I left the other day on a different "299+" Unit thread. Very nice and appropos to see him "working on a no-hitter"... for an inning or two, anyway. Proof (as if it were needed) that 300 wins is all about the back nine. And the MLB Network is pure manna.

So I take it the Unit is forgiven for tanking just enough to get himself traded out of Seattle?

His walk and strikeout rates in '98 with Seattle were the same as the previous year (3.3 bb/12.3 k in '97, 3.4 bb/12.0 k in '98). There was a spike in home runs, though (0.8 to 1.1). Looks a little fluky, not tanking.

Congrats, Unit.

I've still got a poster from his no-hit game (the one with 6 walks) back in 1990 (from early June IIRC). Amazing that he's picking up #300 now.

I'm happy for Randy. I've only been to 1 300th win in person (Nolan Ryan), although I was also at Tom Glavine's 301st. I wish I could have been in DC for Randy's. I'm glad I was able to watch it on TV though.
