SF Gate: Ratto: Rumor has it, Magowan may be a goin’

A solid rumor from Ray Ratto (insert joke here):

The rumors that Peter Magowan may be looking to end his tenure as managing general big shot of the Giants have been swirling for a few weeks now, but it wasn’t until the organization confirmed that the rumors have legs that they started to run.

Wouldn’t it be cool if this woman delegated control of this team to somebody named Smithers?

Sue Burns, the widow of Harmon Burns, who owned the largest single share of the team, could take control simply by virtue of holding the most stock.

Good news for the Dodgers.

Burns sounds like a caretaker owner.

The Giants aren't going to be good for a long time no matter who their owner is. There's no need to yearn for their even further demise at this point.

This is actually a pretty good article by Ratto. Ratto is best when he tries not to be funny on every single line and just examines stuff.

As he noted, Magowan is a known quantity (and he isn't that bad anyway), and there's always a risk the next MGP could be worse. There's also the risk that the Giants could turn into the 1930s Brooklyn Dodgers, a bunch of investors who argue with each other while the team languishes in purgatory. Because of the limited time in which Magowan had to woo investors, the team is basically owned by a bunch of rich people in San Francisco - 30 of them. There isn't really a big fish. In that sense Magowan seemed to do a good job keeping everyone on the same page.

In a perfect world, someone takes over and keeps everyone together, fires Sabean and rebuilds the team. But it's not assured.

On the other hand, there's this:
General manager Brian Sabean could take on more responsibility in a new regime.

They're not booing. They're saying "Suuue Burns".

I heard some rumblings about the McGowan move a couple of months ago but couldn't write anything about it for a complicated set of reasons involving a complicated (but reliable) source. Enough time has passed that I'm not too worried about saying that the second half of what I heard back then was that it would be a two-part move: McGowan to the background, and Sabean out on his kiester.

Allow me to say that if this is part one of a two-part shoe dropping, it may be nice to be a Giants fan again sometime soon.

I was saying Sue Burns...
