SF Gate: Tim Goodman: Giants telecasts should just play ball

Some interesting thoughts from the Chronicle’s Television Writer:

Whether he’s overusing his favorite phrase, “Grab some pine, meat,” or layering on the familiar “gamer” tag, he takes the notion of color to the extreme. In fact, Krukow is also known for “eliminating” people in the stands he doesn’t like by using the Telestrator. Mostly his targets are Dodger fans or those who have crossed some anti-Giants threshold. If there’s anyone more “homer” about the Giants, he or she is heretofore unknown.

In fairness to Krukow, even though he has no apparent personal dislike of being goofy (old-school player aphorisms and lingo, a willingness to chat about characters in the crowd), he’s much better when he keeps the goofiness tamped down. He knows the game. He adds value with his insight. And he handles with aplomb what is expected of most analysts: to repeatedly tell fans what they already know (that someone dropped a bunt in the perfect situation, that a batter stayed balanced through a swing or a runner advanced with a heads-up play). Done in the proper way, this never comes off as being condescending or overly obvious. (John Madden has made a career out of this neat little trick.)

Goodman's views and articles on "The Wire" were first class - he's one of my favourite 'go-to' guys for television. Huge fan

He's not an analytical genius, but Krukow is more entertaining than homer to me. And I dislike the Giants so would be inclined to call an obnoxious homer an obnoxious homer. One thing that Krukow does that I don't hear elsewhere is give a detailed accounting of how the home plate ump in that game calls the strike zone. He does it right at the start of the game, and it always holds up. He knows what he speaks of. If a guy is inconsistent and generally crappy, he says so. I like it.

As for the criticisms in the quoted portion, I think he uses "Grab some pine, meat" far less than he once did. And I feel silly defending the "eliminating", but he does it to pretty much anyone who has something offensive about them, Giants fan or no.

And he has his own cliches, but doesn't seem to use many of the more well used ones that guys like Buck Martinez spout every time they open their mouths.

Krukow is awesome.

Krukow is a cheerful & likable homer, which makes him a fantastic pre-game or post game guy. But his PBP & in-game color is just WRONG.

When Krukow first started broadcasting for the Giants in the early 1990s, he was painful to listen to. He's improved quite a bit, although I can understand how he might not be someone's cup of tea.

Little known, semi-interesting fact: despite being a pitcher, Krukow has 4 more career homeruns than his longtime broadcasting partner, Duane Kuiper--who was an infielder with several thousand more career ABs.

I really like Krukow, or at least I did back in the '90s when I lived in San Francisco. He was legitimately funny without being mean, and the humor didn't seem forced. He also provided the occasional bit of honest-to-God insight.

Actually, I thought everyone on that SF broadcasting crew was fantastic.

You must not have been listening to Krukow. The next time Krukow does PBP will be the first time. He's strictly been a color guy ever since he hit the booth.
