Cue Jay-Z opening Rihanna’s “Umbrella” by going “uh-huh uh-huh”.
There is more to the story of why the Giants named Barry Zito their Opening Day starter, and it has to do with who will be slotted third in the rotation - the team leader in wins last year.
The micromanaging of the rotation in a manner similar to the 1985 edition is eerie. That team led off the year by pitching Atlee Hammaker and Dave LaPoint against the Padres so that they could send three righties against LA - Mike Krukow, Bill Laskey and Jim Gott. The strategy led to a 3-2 start, but the rest of the season was a disaster.

There seems to have been little interest. Another mediocre infield or outfield bat does the team little good at this point.
Isn't a shame to pay a pitcher like Zito that much money, only to fill a lineup with sub par offensive players? What a mistake it was.
Of course, we should be optimistic, Molina said they need to win 95 games and that they don't necessarily need home runs to achieve that total.
Wow....
Really they should have signed Dallas McPherson and given him a shot. Or trade for Andy Marte and see what he can do.
I also saw on rotoworld that Fred Lewis, Raj Davis and Dan Ortmeier are all out of options, meaning Nate Schierholtz won't make the team. The Giants are going to be awesome.
#5, Crede is basically Pedro Feliz, except without the best-in-the-majors glove. I'd give him league minimum, sure. He's a real major-leaguer, unlike half the Giants lineup. That said, I wouldn't trade so much as a bucket of balls for him. Well, maybe one bucket of really badly scuffed balls. But not more. Crikey, you mention 'sub par offensive players?' This is a man whose Eqa tops out in the .260s when he's completely healthy. And he probably isn't healthy any more.
#6, it's a given that the only reason to watch the Giants is to watch pitching. Sanchez is no star, but throws 93mph from the left. Might as well give the fans something worth tuning in for.
Don't forget his bad back!
I don't believe there is any beyond "Conventional Baseball Wisdom". But these are the Giants we're talking about.
