Shakin: Dodgers still looking as shortstops land elsewhere

Two shortstops are gone, and maybe a third. The Giants have signed Edgar Renteria, the Cardinals acquired Khalil Greene from the Padres, and the Tigers reportedly are pushing hard to acquire Jack Wilson from the Padres.

The Dodgers still don’t have a shortstop, with management unconvinced that Chin-lung Hu can hit major league pitching, at least not now. They say they’re still interested in bringing back Rafael Furcal, but their decision not to offer him arbitration says they weren’t interested in him accepting a one-year contract if it might cost them in the range of $13 million, which is the same as his 2008 salary.

It is unlikely that Furcal could have gotten much of a raise in arbitration, given that he was limited to 36 games last season because of a back injury and subsequent surgery.

Other than Furcal, who visited last week with the Oakland A’s, the top remaining free-agent shortstop is Orlando Cabrera. The White Sox offered him arbitration, so the Dodgers would have to surrender their first-round draft choice to sign him, and they would prefer to explore other options. But it’s a steep drop from Furcal and Cabrera to the likes of Alex Cora, Cesar Izturis and David Eckstein, so the Dodgers will be talking trade at next week’s winter meetings.

The Angels are satisfied with Erick Aybar, who had an eventful week in winter ball, and are not looking for a shortstop.

Cabrera will be the guy.

I think that if the offers are equal, the Pirates would probably prefer to go with LA's Wilson package, since all of Detroit's shortstop prospects suck. That said, it sounds like Detroit might be offering significantly more total talent right now.

Here's hoping that Coletti has already added Jack Zduriencik's cell phone number to his speed dial. I think that Betancourt could look quite nice in Dodger blue (or, for that matter, any color other than Mariner teal).

And when did the Padres pick up Jack Wilson?

i will not be surprised if they plunk for david eckstein. he'll be an overnight fan favorite, even if he plays terrible.

If the Dodgers are intent of not having Hu or DeJesus play SS out of spring training and trading for a SS. I would much rather trade for a guy like Maicer Izturis instead of Orland Cabrera or Jack Wilson. He'll give you similar production of Jack Wilson, just as good of a fielder, costs millions less, and the Angels have Aybar and Brandon Wood. It'll be the perfect buy low situation.

I'm getting worried that Orlando Cabrera might accept arbitration.

It would be hilarious if Cabrera accepted arb. They would have to find a trade partner but they probably couldn't until the arbitration award was settled.

Julio Lugo comes with free money! Ned, you know you love giving up good prospects for guys who's salary are being paid by someone else...

Ned already rode the Lugo train in 06 and didn't like it the first time.

I would be more worried if I were his agent and having to tell him that I can't get him "Edgar Renteria Money" on the open market. OCab looks like he could mess you up!
