Sherman: Yankees set to lower offer to Pettitte

And if that doesn’t bring him back, they’ll lower it even more.

Andy Pettitte’s chances to return to the Yankees New York Yankees have dropped precipitously because in the aftermath of the Mark Teixeira signing the organization is now strongly inclined to lower the $10 million offer that the lefty already has been resistant to all offseason, the Post has learned.

Pettitte recently rejected the Yankees’ latest $10 million overture, and now - barring a wave of sentimentality by the Yanks or significant change of strategy by either side - that dollar figure very likely will not be offered again.

Multiple sources refused to divulge if the offer had been lowered already. But one executive briefed on the matter described both the chances of making a deal and the $10 million bid as on life support. Another executive said he did not believe that the $10 million offer was there to be taken any longer. A lowered offer almost certainly would assure the end of the prideful Pettitte’s second tour with the Yankees.

I wonder if the Yankees will be so cold when Derek Jeter's contract is up.

If Jeter plays like Pettitte did in the second half, I hope so.

I don't. I know it's dogma here that fans root for laundry, but I don't. I like Pettitte (and Jeter), and would rather both stay with the Yankees until they retire. Even to the point of winning less. Hell, I wanted Bernie back as a backup.

Pettitte: I'm not signing for $10 mil.
Yankees: How about $8 mil?

Are the Yankees a better team spending the 10 million on Pettitte or Cameron? In other words, is

Pettitte-Hughes > Cameron-Melky?

I hope so. If Babe f-ing Ruth didn't get to retire as a Yankee, I can't cry for anyone else.

That was pretty much what ran through my mind when I read the headline.

Yup, and in Andy's case, the Yankees are accelerating the opportunity. Yankee fans on this board app preferred to bring Moose back give n a choice; non-Yankee fans have thought Andy overrated for years.

He's a bit high maintenance with all his talk about maybe I don't want to play too long but only for the Yankees except when I play for the Astros, and then for the Yankees again, but not for too long, but for two years though I may only play one, and oh yeah, there's the HGH story I forgot to tell you. I don't get the feeling Derek's been this difficult.

If I were the Mets, I'd say "How about $2M and 30+ chances to show up your old team on the back pages of the Post and Daily News?"

Are the Yankees really being that cold? They offered $10M/yr to a guy who was okay, but not great for them in 2008. Pettitte jumped ship on the Yankees five years ago so it's not like he's been a lifetime Yankee.

If Jeter decides to Biggio on the Yankees and play well beyond his usefulness, then they should cut him loose. Likewise, the guy is not worth what he's been paid for the better part of the last five years (possible exception is 2006). He should expect any contract extension offered for 2011 and beyond (age 37+) to be well below $21M. If he insists on earning $21M, then he should expect to be disappointed.

Strongly inclined? That's beyond awesome.

Refuse our offer, will you? Well you know what's next, don't you? We're inclined to lower the offer! And you know the extent of said inclination? Strong. We're ****ing strongly inclined toward that course of action.

Thank god I'm not Pettitte. I don't know what I'd do in the face of such corporate brinksmanship.

   14. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: January 06, 2009 at 11:48 PM (#3045073)
(My best guess is that "strongly inclined" means a Steinbrenner is throwing a tantrum and Cashman is holding his ground.)

If Jeter plays like Pettitte did in the second half, I hope so.
Really? If Jeter has a partial season of below average performance, you'd like to see him disrespected by the Yankees?

Hell, ignore the snark in the links. That's how you want the Yankees to treat Derek Jeter? Fans really think that way? That's sad.
   16. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 07, 2009 at 08:58 AM (#3045213)
In a distant way this reminds me of when the Packers disengaged from Favre. Favre's offseason dithering is well known and GB (specifically GM Ted Thompson) just got tired of it. That and the team had to find out what the former number one pick Rodgers had to offer.

So they said later and once Favre changed his mind stuck to their guns. He pouted, the commish got involved and Favre landed in NY.

Bud Selig isn't as nosy as Goodell nor is Andy that level of star so no such action will be taken. But the Yanks are right to just hold firm. Especially in this financial climate. They have more options than Andy......

Babe Ruth didn't retire with the Yankees.

You guys do realize that Babe Ruth could have retired as a Yankee if he had just, you know, retired.

That's how you want the Yankees to treat Derek Jeter? Fans really think that way? That's sad.

Well, it's Boston's fault. Your team unceremoniously dumps Nomar, and wins its first championship in forever. Then they let a bunch of 2004 heroes walk, and win another one. There's got to be something to this right? If sh!tting on your icons is what it takes, then so be it.

Seriously, though, you shouldn't get so worked up about guys like Sherman (or his "sources") making this kind of stuff up. It's just spin, and we really have no idea what has actually gone on in these negotiations.

In other words, is Pettitte-Hughes > Cameron-Melky?

It's very hard for me to judge Pettitte-Hughes, because I really have no idea how much Pettitte might slip or how much Hughes might improve. But Cameron-Melky is probably worth a billion wins. My 14 year old would be an upgrade over Melky, and he's nobody's idea of a HS JV CF. Well, actually he is one guy's idea of a HS JV CF, but fortunately that guy isn't coaching him anymore.
   18. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: January 07, 2009 at 10:25 AM (#3045246)
Jeter is not Andy though.

Andy already left the Yankees for the Astros once. If he doesn't leave the Yankees before the 04 season, we probably don't trade for Kevin Brown. And if the Yanks don't trade for Kevin Brown, who left after one year and 70 innings, they probably don't sign Carl Pavano.

So, I mean, Its not like this is a Jeter situation in 2010, if anyone knows it is a business, its Andy.

though this situation is one of the uglier Yankee/fan favorite divorce I can remember. Eevn if it is just Sherman puffing up a column.

You guys do realize that Babe Ruth didn't start with the Yankees, so it wasn't like he was a life-long Yankee. :)

And if a guy doesn't want to retire, you can't hold that against him either.

But it's doubly hilarious. First they come up with gold like "strongly inclined". And then Yankee fans like Blomberg take it as undisputed truth, and as brilliant negotiating strategy.

w/r/t the Red Sox and their stars, I'd really rather that they show some loyalty and at least keep from leaking their #### to the press. I don't get why a Yankee fan would want his team to behave that way - it's not fun.

I just don't care for Pettitte. With Bernie, I wanted him to retire because the thought of him in another uniform bothered me. With Andy? Do whatever you like.

Not me. The only annoying thing about Jeter is his admirers in the national media. Pettitte just seems a little sanctimonious to me- I couldn't care less whether he did or did not take HGH, or why, but his public performances on that scene last year were pretty hard to stomach.

Couldn't that be solved by having an attendant just clean him up, put a bib on him, and give him a nice bowl of cottage cheese? Or were you not talking about Hank?

So do the Yankees use this money to take a flier on Sheets for 2/24 or something similar? It would only cost a fourth round pick..

You're probably wrong. Jeter is the favorite player for a good third of the kids in the LLWS, and they're not from New York. And he's one of the most marketable players in the country while Pettitte is mostly know for an undeserved postseason rep and his HGH scandal. I doubt even the Thinkfactory crowd prefers Pettitte.

Really? I think you are overrating that .340 BA in 1996. Even with that, his OPS+ was only 112, and his defense was only adequate. He was out of baseball after the next year too..
   32. billyshears Posted: January 07, 2009 at 12:24 PM (#3045397)
What's the Yankees' objective here? Do they want Pettitte back? Do they want Pettitte back but not for a dollar more than $10 mil? Do they not want Pettitte back, but want to appear as if they do for PR purposes? At first, I thought it was #1 but I gradually started leaning towards #2. But this latest tantrum seems designed to ensure that they don't sign Pettitte, so maybe it's #3.

i long ago understood that pettitte is a MUCH worse prima donna than clemens. and not as good a pitcher

when pettitte signed here it sounded like he wanted to come home that the yankees weren't interested in re-signing him at ALL

i was surprised when i found out that the truth was that they didn't originally offer him as much as he wanted as fast as he wanted to get an offer

and the year he went BACK to the yankees, well, the truth is that AFTER the season, he told and kept telling the reporters that he didn't know whether or not he wanted to retire/play baseball any more. best i know, that is what his agents told ownership/GM too. then when they looked around for a replacement for a pitcher they couldn't be sure was gonna be there, pettitte threw a hissy fit and stalked off back to NY while telling all the other guys that he had expected to come back as an astro all along and they didn't want him. then after that he said it was all about NY giving him a player option and houston wouldn't

of course, he is not no clemens so didn't nobody never give him the shtt for that he deserved

a LOT of these athletes total prima donnas who act like teenage grrrls in a popularity contest. but since they end up with one of the big 4 don't the media call them on it. unless of course they clemens or barry lamar. or particularly good that year
