“Stats are stats” handle going once, twice…
But if you’ve got a beating heart and any modicum of pride in what you do for a living, it’s hard to believe that Pierre is not at all perturbed that he’s heading back to the dugout despite putting up fantastic numbers in Ramirez’s absence. Pierre declined numerous requests to comment for this story, and tries to deflect as much attention from himself as he can in interviews with beat writers. But ask his best friend, Los Angeles Angels third baseman Chone Figgins, and it isn’t hard to read through the lines.
“I do feel badly for him because he’s my best friend and he’s not getting to play [regularly],” said Figgins, who came up with Pierre in the Colorado Rockies farm system. “But we’ve seen what happened with the Manny Ramirez situation and the fact that he did do something that was illegal. In retrospect, [the Dodgers] should see that a player that hasn’t done things like that is putting up numbers that are natural. It should be shown that we deserve more respect than what we get.”
...“Now he’s a so-called bench player, which isn’t accurate,” said Figgins. “Bench players don’t get a five-year contract or get 200 hits over the last couple years, [only] behind Ichiro [Suzuki]. Stats are stats.”

Stats are stats: Since June 1, Pierre has had 114 at bats. He has scored 11 runs while batting leadoff. This does ont make him, as the quote in the article says "the best leadoff man in the game". He has driven in 4. 4 RBI in over a month. Slugging avg .307.
Who exactly should be benched so Pierre can play? Ethier? Kemp? I laugh heartily.
Red. Hot.
Even when he was hitting hot, there wasn't any WHAMMO.
He's white?!
And credit to Torre, too, for being too nice to take the easy route of pointing out that Pierre's not been good for a month. That sure must have made his decision easier.
True, this could all end in arguments and attitude eventually, but I'm impressed with the professionalism of all concerned for now.
Still, Manny Ramirez is a HoF level player, so he (Pierre) surely has to understand how things go.
QED
If he was in the final year of his deal, rather then being guaranteed $10 mil this year and next, and an additional $8.5 mil in 2011, I'd be more impressed.
Yeah, but even Pierre's better than a lot of guys who've made bigger stinks about being benched. See, e.g., Operation Shutdown. Credit where it's due.
I wonder if he could negotiate a buyout. Would the MLBPA have to approve that?
Since June 1, 57 different NL players have scored 12 runs or more.
agreed, Pierre seems to be a guy that fans and players both like and we would like to see more like him, but unfortunately he just isn't a good enough player to be playing everyday.

Pierre since 5/28: .252/.307/.291
Red. Hot.
And as mentioned he isn't red hot, if the last month of numbers is red hot, then the my team is on fire.
Yes. If the ARod/Manny trade situation is any guide, the MLBPA will also blow the calculation of the benefits and costs.
