S.I. : Heyman: Nats GM in trouble, Rox on the block, pitchers who’ll get paid

Latest from the suddenly poochless Heyman…

As for Bowden, a person is innocent until proven guilty, of course, and all Bowden is guilty of to this point is a string of baseball mistakes that appear to have left the Nationals years from contention, from the failure to sign the talented Crow to acquiring players of questionable character such as Elijah Dukes to locking up not one but two first basemen with chronic health issues (Nick Johnson is injury prone while Dmitri Young’s diabetes is no small concern) to fielding a team with only one major-league average position player (third baseman Ryan Zimmerman).

Several competing GMs criticized the Nationals for trading productive reliever Jon Rauch in a market bereft of bullpen stars for second-base prospect Emilio Bonifacio, a speed and glove man who one scout said “will struggle with the breaking ball.’’ But it’s early, and Bonifacio is said by those who know him to be a “great kid.’’

Nats people are downplaying the defection of Crow, saying that since their lost first-round pick will be replaced by a similar one next year, that’s not such a big deal. However, any delay does hurt the team that has wisely emphasized their drafts and player development (they signed their first 20 picks last year, and went over slot on rounds two through five this year). As one competing executive said, “The Nationals need whatever they can get.’’

to acquiring players of questionable character such as Elijah Dukes

And how has this hurt the Nats? Fine, Heyman doesn't like Elijah Dukes, but his signing hasn't done anything to hurt the Nats this year except let petty reporters take shots at him.

Dukes is one of their better hitters.

The other "Rox" on the block (besides Holliday) bit is a big breaking story -- Todd Helton. Yes, it's hard to imagine that the Rox would like to trade away that huge contract when the guy's hurt and only hitting 266/393/391 (102 OPS+) before getting hurt. Heyman does acknowledge that the Rox will have to eat a lot of cash but it's not clear he notices that Helton isn't very good anymore. Still a useful player (if healthy) but nobody's gonna be banging down the door to get him ... well unless Bavasi gets another GM job.

Insert your own Brett Myers-esque joke...

Dmitri Young’s diabetes is no small concern

I'm not too familiar with diabetes but this strikes me as ignorant as there have been athletes with diabetes in past where it was not a concern, Bobby Clarke immediately comes to mind and that was over 30 years ago. The no small concern with Young's health would seem to be his fatness, not his insulin.

Well being a fatass and diabetic is no way to go through life. Bobby Clarke had a legendary work ethic, Dmitri Young does not. Being overweight just makes the diabetes much, much more of a problem.

As a question, how much cash do people think the Rockies would need to eat to get someone to trade for Helton and the $52.3M (2009 - $16.6M, 2010 - $16.6M, 2010 - $19.1M) + $4.6M buyout remaining on his contract?

DEFECTION of Crow?

Talk about a poor choice of words.

I just don't understand who anyone could be defending Bowden by now. If he was making good decisions the team wouldn't have seen a consistent and steep decline every year since he took over. He's had enough time to get us going in the right direction.

And he's an ass.

The Dukes comment is funny...as if the Nats problem right now is clubhouse chemistry, not total lack of talent.

Bowden is horrible; you have to start questioning the Nats ownership if he's back for next year, don't you?

Is it really? They almost traded him a year and a half ago, so it shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

They're gonna get squat for him unless and until he comes back and shows he can still hit, and that's not going to happen this year. It may never happen. He doesn't seem likely to play again this season at all.

If you look at his record, you can see when his back started hurting. On June 12 he was at .297/.419/.439, which is more or less what I expected out of him this year. Then he proceeded to hit .138/.286/.190 over his next 70 PAs before mercifully being put on the DL.

Yeah, but he's got a killer segway. Have you seen that thing?

When season ticket sales for 2009 decline sharply and even the presence of the Red Sox on the home interleague schedule doesn't stem the tide, then you'll see Nats management finally get the message and send Bowden on his way.

I would hope the change would take place earlier to prevent him from doing any further damage, but I doubt management is that smart. Or perhaps Jimbo has some compromising pix of the Lerners we don't know about.

Whatever, it's dispiriting to see the Nats become the contemporary equivalent of the 1963 Senators.

I thought some of his moves over the winter were fantastic. The Kearns/Lopez trade looked great at the time. The farm system was gutted when he took over and it has improved. To my mind it's as easy to make a case for the defence as the prosecution.

If I was the owner, unless there was a GM candidate who really knocked my socks off, I would keep Bowden for at least another year. I certainly wouldn't ditch him for the sake of it, not yet anyway.

I think it's legitimate to cite Young's diabetes as a concern. There are athletes for whom it isn't an issue (Moreow, Dan Reichert, etc.), but given Young's generally poor conditioning, I could see him being lazy about montoring his blood sugar, too.
