Strange day ends with Bonds’ 756th HR ball in Cooperstown

Asterisk or not, the ball Barry Bonds launched for his record-breaking 756th home run won’t land in the Hall of Fame.

The Hall said Tuesday recent talks with fashion designer Marc Ecko, who bought the souvenir for more than $750,000 last September, had “unfortunately reached an impasse.”

“The owner’s previous commitment to unconditionally donate the baseball has changed to a loan. As a result, the Hall of Fame will not be able to accept the baseball,” the Hall said in a statement.

I can’t remember which side I argued passionately for, but I’m pretty sure “The Hall agrees to the asterisk and still doesn’t get the ball” wasn’t it.

Presumably the person who submits TFA would actually have RTFA. The Hall got the ball as a donation, not a loan.

@2

I noted that in the Chacon/Wade thread.

When I submitted the article, the Hall was saying "We're not getting the ball because Ecko is insisting on it being a loan". See the quoted excerpt, which describes the state of things as of a few hours ago.

Glad to see that the HOF will be getting a nice conversation piece in all of its vandalized splendor. Oughta shake things up a little at the old mausoleum.

Too bad Bonds doesn't have Pete Rose's sense of humor about things like this. Rose will gladly sign the Dowd Report for his usual autograph price.

As long as they present all sides of the conversation. A video clip of Larry Starr talking about Fehr, Selig and FO guys he mentioned in those interviews (omitted form the Mitchell Report) would be one of my first suggestions.

SOme people have principles.

Rose would smother an infant with a pillow and sign it for an extra $50.

I'm not surprised Andy is a fan.

I note that someone in the Hall apparently has a sense of decency:

"Based on the Hall of Fame's previous statements that they would both accept and display the ball, the only open issue we were talking about was the Hall's recent indication of discomfort in displaying it and addressing the controversy surrounding the record."

My bad then. I figured since the title of the entry was "day ends with...ball in Cooperstown" that that was the status when posted.

Ecko is a moron and an attention wh0re. His motivations behind the asterisk likely had more to do with his own egotistical desire to be remembered forever rather than his love for the game and thus his natural outrage at a "tainted" record.

It's like if I found a long lost Picasso in my attic, painted a giant erect wang over it, and then donated it to a museum only after making them promise that they wouldn't try to erase or cover up my "addition" in any way.

It's pure childishness.

He should have gotten Tim Robbins to sign the ball.

The asterisk speaks to a period in history when logic came to a full stop, thanks to some semi-colon with dollar signs hamfistedly trying to redefine an artifact with a backward slash. This apostrophic dash to dumbness was applauded by dittoheads whose minds can't deal with question marks.

Booey, you would be more original than 99% of the contemporary art out there.
