SNY: Boorstein: How the Yankees can solve their third-base problem

Uhh…De-seed Rich McKinney’s hair (and drop it), roll it up (and drop it), and pass it around (and drop it again)?

Think about how selfish Rodriguez is. When he came over from Texas in the 2004 trade, he insisted on moving to a new position to prove he could be more than the best shortstop ever. It was Rodriguez that insisted that Jeter keep his position at shortstop. That was all part of his master plan to watch Jeter atrophy into the worst fielder in baseball and make Rodriguez look better by association.

For the next five years, they know they are going to get elite-level offense and above-average defense barring an injury. And he’s durable. But that’s too much certainty. The Yankees need someone who will middle along for most of the season, get one big hit the whole summer but can provide the intangibles that help teams win. Those are more important than 45 home runs.

If the Yankees don’t win next season, Rodriguez should shoulder all the blame. None of it should go to the aging offense around him that is no longer near its peak, much less at it. It’s not Jeter’s fault he’s turned into a singles hitter or Hideki Matsui’s fault that he can’t run down to first base without having his knee drained. A-Rod caused that and more. The young pitchers have developed a losing mentality simply from sharing a clubhouse with Rodriguez. Until he’s gone, there is no hope for this franchise.

Granted, I didn't RTFA, but I wish the Giants had such issues.

EDIT: Ok, now that I've RTFA, I realize this was tongue-in-cheek. Carry on everyone.

I took the bait at first and got a little bit angry. The sad part is that it is believable that someone would write this sort of thing as a serious article.

Man, that was really scary.... i agree with #2, pretty sad that i would consider something like this to be seriously written by a journalist.

Now that's sarcasm.

Priceless.

I was scared for a moment. But, good job.

Really? This part, from the very first paragraph quoted above, wasn't sort of give-away that the whole things was a put on?

#7 -- some people require their irony detectors to be kick-started. I myself have had this problem from time to time.

Well, given all the foaming at the mouth articles linked here this week with the theme of "It's a disgrace Ryan Howard finished #2-yeah he should have been 10th-no he should have won, you VORPing statmonkey assnugget!", you never know anymore.

Srul, after reading that, I also thought it was serious. And #8, it says just as much about the level of Jeter love and ARod hate as it does about the person reading it. It wasn't until "But that's too much certainty" that I realized it was sarcastic.

At least it was written in New York...hopefully some Yankee fans will read it.

If folks here didn't pick up on the (rather blatant) sarcasm, what chance do the Jeter-loving unwashed have?

Srul, it's obvious that only sarcastic old geezers like us have the ability to spot One Of Us a mile away. It's our version of gaydar.

And seriously, how can anyone not have figured out in the very first sentence what this was leading up to? Would the most clueless A-Rod basher in the world have ever begun a tirade by coming right out from the git-go and stated "how selfish Rodriguez is" in any forum other than an anonymous rantfest over WFAN? Of course not. First they always list his statistics, and THEN they proceed to tear them apart. It's the oldest formula in the world, and when it isn't used you've got to know there's something fishy going on.

Tom got a couple of really nasty, hilarious e-mails off this. I'd have thought lines like, "So why is [Jeter's] career on-base percentage only .387 instead of something like, say, .850? Respect for the game, that's why." would have tipped people off.

You have to figure something's up when the title is A Modest Proposal.
