SNY: Megdal: Why jerseys don’t sell

For years...I took offense to the jersey, Schmelz.

The jersey doesn’t provide much enthusiasm about the present, either. This does speak more specifically to the team’s current circumstances. Fans are justifiably skeptical about the 2010 team right now, but this doesn’t mean they aren’t excited about individual players. David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Johan Santana are all players whom fans are eager to see perform next year—even more so after seeing less of them than they wanted to in 2009.

But if Mets fans were compelled to buy jerseys for any of them, they’d have already bought them. And it is hard to know how much to celebrate 2010 in advance. After all, these are the same consumers who may have prematurely celebrated 2007 with an NL East Champions shirt, 2008 for the final year at Shea or 2009 for the debut of Citi Field. As much as each of the latter two will provide some positive memories, I can’t imagine anyone wants to evoke either season when wearing a jersey to the ballpark. So to wait and see what 2010 will mean after the fact makes a lot of sense to me.

The Mets just re-signed Alex Cora to a one year deal for 2m, with a vesting option for 2011 if he gets 80 starts. He shouldn't get that many starts so the option doesn't really bother me. It's not a lot of money and Cora did alright as a backup before being pressed into everyday duty but it's such a blah choice. Cora gets a lot of credit for clubhouse stuff but I would have liked to see them do something else. 2 million for Cora is probably a million too much.

For me it's the nipple chafing

Jeez, Joey Cora isn't that bad. Or that good...

Aha I knew Alex Cora and Joey Cora were the same player.

Well, $2m for Cora here and $2m for Cora there, and pretty soon you're talking about $140m worth of trash.

I don't get why a player gets so much money because of the clubhouse factor. You're basically paying Cora $2 million for the clubhouse factor. Did the Mets front office just assign a number to what they think a good guy in the clubhouse is worth, and pay Cora that amount?

I don't know whether or not Cora is worth the contract, but you're not going to see many inspiring choices for utility infielder spots. They're rather "blah" by definition.

I know most utility infielders suck but I was oping for a Rule 5 pick or a minor league free agent with upside, a poor man's Dan Uggla for example. Obviously, it's highly unlikely you'll find a guy like that and even less likely that he'll pan out but at least there's a chance.

And as Levski insinuated, overpay enough marginal players and it starts to add up.

At the very least, wait until after the Rule 5 Draft and potential avalanche of non-tenders before committing to a backup MI.

Speaking of which, the Mets have signed Chris Coste. Probably just a depth signing.

Coste posted a 100 OPS+ as a part time player in three years prior to last season when he dropped to 65.

Color me apathetic.

The Coste signing is odd, due to it not being an NRI. Why commit a 40 man spot right before the rule-5 draft? The Mets couldn't wait until after Friday to sign Coste? Or are they just not going to bother dabbling in the rule 5 draft?

The Mets have some free spots on their 40-man roster already and have a bunch of guys they could release if they needed spots. Andy Green is still on the roster and there's no room for him on the team with Cora signed as a utility infielder and Anderson Hernandez another option in case Cora falters.

Jeremy Reed and Cory Sullivan are both on the roster and there's no need for both of them to be there because they already have Beltran and Pagan. Tim Redding is still technically on the team although I expect him to be non-tendered.

They have spots if they need them.

The Mets are an incredibly dumb team collectively, and Cora is a smart player.
Now, maybe you retire him and make him a coach at a lower price, but they're trying to kill two birds with one stone here.
